Page4 - QueensBirthday Weekend and a trip to the Brass Monkey 2005 By Carl. |
|
|
| Sunday morning I awoke about 8am to a light frost. That would make this just an average Brass Monkey, no where near as cold as last years snowy one. I had a little breakfast then packed the bike again. |

On leaving the site the organisers were handing out a 25th Anniversary Rally Badge just for those who had stayed overnight. So those who had only visited for the afternoon and then left to go elsewhere overnight missed out on this one. Whoopee. Pete had been talking to some guys camped next to us about some different back roads to ride on the way home, so he was determined to extend our adventure into the unknown. Paul was also keen to explore but had to return the bike on Sunday night. |

| So it was that we would go over Danseys again and regroup at Kurow then decide who's going what way home. Marc went down the road for fuel. Paul want to the local Pub to see Jules and co. and Pete took his time back at the camp to give Marc and I a head start. I hooked up with Marc on his little Honda XL185 near the Rally gate and off we went. I was a little unsure of how Marc would go on such a small bike and with little experience but he had come this far so i at least wanted to take him over Danseys. Marc is our new German friend. He's new to motorcycling and has only been in New Zealand for about 6 months. I had been swapping emails with him for a couple of weeks about the Plains Motorcycle Club. We had arranged to meet at the Rally. Now I wanted to help him see and experience some of New Zealands back country. The sort of stuff you don't get on the main roads. The morning was thick with fog and as we hit the dirt roads at Naseby i was reminded how bad the front mudguard is at keeping the mud from spraying up off the wheel over the front of the bike and my helmet visor. That just plain makes it hard to see. I'm told that the little extension on the F650 Dakars front mudguard helps a little, so I think I'll have to try and get one to mount on my GS. |

We stopped for a couple of minutes at the side of the road and Paul and Pete caught us up. Then five more minutes on the bikes and we stopped at the Danseys Pass Pub. Time for a snack. Pete and Paul stayed for a while but Marc and I continued on in to the pass. The road had absolutely no ice on it today which made the trip easier and there were quite a few more bikes of different makes and models going through. As we came to the top of the pass we rode out from the cloud into the sunshine. What a relief...... |

Marc and I stopped for a few minutes at the top of Danseys to take in the view and get some photos. Then we headed off down toward Duntroon. |
