"Cookie" Ornaments

An easy project for all ages is clay ornaments made with cookie cutters. Choose a Clay Dough Roll it out and use your favorite cookie cutters to create wonderful ornaments. Be sure to use a toothpick to poke a hole for a hanger before drying (If you are going to bake them to dry, make sure to make the hole a little larger than you think you need. The hole will shrink some when baking. Decorate with paints (acrylic paint is good, but a 3-dimensional paint gives the appearance of frosting), sequins, beads, acrylic 'jewels' or just leave plain. Just remember to varnish no matter how you decorate. This will prevent them from getting moldy. Store finished ornaments in airtight containers. To further prevent ornaments from getting soggy, make a cheesecloth or linen bag filled with silica gel (the stuff used to dry flowers) and place in the container with the ornaments.

All of the doughs I have listed can be air dried. A couple, the No Cook Salt Dough and the Applesauce Dough can be baked dry in the oven (and boy do Applesauce dough ornaments smell terrific while baking dry). Just set the oven at its lowest temperature setting and bake about a half hour, checking every 10 to 15 minutes. Thinner ornaments will take less time, thicker ones more time. When dry, remove from cookie sheets onto racks, just like you would real cookies.
