The Gorham Lions Club was chartered in 1954. This year we celebrate our 50th year of service to Gorham, to Maine and to the world. We still have one charter member, Richard Barden, and we want to take this opportunity to thank him and honor him for 50 years of service. Thank You. Over the years we have accomplished a lot. To name a few; We have given thousands of dollars for scholarships to Gorham High School graduates and for new eyeglasses. We were the prime force in buying Fort Hill Park for all to enjoy. We bought the first Band Uniforms for the High School, and lighted the first soccer field. We started the little league baseball and sponsored the Gorham Lions Little League team and have kept them going. Weve helped the Fire Department and helped equip a new rescue unit. We raised $7000 and renovated Robie Gym, and donated money to Gorham Land Trust, and to Gorham Trails to help build the new trail from the H.S. to the new Middle School, and weve helped Baxter Memorial Library, which in turn has helped us. And the list goes on. Today were as strong as ever. This Lions year, we adopted several families for Christmas. What a joy that was! Weve supported the Gorham Food Bank, Gorham Meal Site, the Salvation Army, Lauries Kids, Bruce Roberts Fund, Susan Curtis Foundation, the Iris Network, Camp Sunshine, many Lions District projects and the Lions International Fund. We helped a handicapped Gorham resident with equipment, and we bought a hearing aid to another. We helped with frozen pipes and repaired a camper. And the list goes on. This is our busy time of the year and there are still many things to do until we start a new Lions year in July. Our proudest project is the sponsorship of a new Leo Club. The members are 8th graders up to H.S. seniors. They had their Charter night in April last year and are in full swing leaving their mark on this town. This active group will not go unnoticed! We support Scouts and youth groups who meet in our club house. The house itself is one of our projects. It is the old Elmwood school house, which we did extensive work on last year. We are glad to help you with any questions or concerns you might have. We are here to help and serve. We serve is our motto! Gorham Lions, the ones in the yellow vests! |
