Berkeley 2002 : A Misleading Campaign

Misleading is a nice way to say lying.

During the final days of the District 8 Berkeley City Council Run, Gordo sent out a campaign flier featuring then recently-elected mayor Tom Bates, Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Berkeley, State Sen. Don Perata, D-Oakland, and Wozniak under the heading "Berkeley's Best Democratic Team!" One big happy family!

Small problem: Bates and Lee had both endorsed Andy Katz, Gordo's opponent! Bates and Lee were so unhappy with flier that they began contacting voters in taped phone recordings to "set the record straight" about the Wozniak campaign flier. "A casual observer would see that and think I'm supporting Wozniak," Bates said, calling Wozniak's unauthorized use of his image "not a good practice."

Well, if you can't use someone's image without permission, how about their name? In yet another incident, Gordo led voters to believe he had the support of a community leader when in fact he did not. This time it was a campaign letter that referred to "over 50 members of the Sierra Club" who endorsed Wozniak.

Small problem here as well, Gordo: the organization had endorsed Katz, in what club official Mike Daley said was a unanimous vote. And using the "trademarked" Sierra Club name for candidates that the club had not endorsed was a violation of club bylaws, Daley explained. To avoid confusion, the club released a statement informing its members that it had endorsed only Katz and "countered representations made by another candidate."
