Chapter 43

They walked back in the waiting room and all eyes were on him as Nate walked over and sat next to Quinn.  Nick looked down as he sat next to Larry,
"What's going on?"  Larry leaned over and whispered,
"They delayed the surgery, something about low oxygen intake and not wanting to put her under."  He nodded and held his head down, he didn't know what to say, what to do.  Should he go over to Quinn and say he was sorry or what?  He saw a pair of shoes before him and lifted his head to see Quinn,
"Can I see you outside please?"  He nodded and stood up, glancing over to see her family watching them.  He followed her in silence as they walked down the hall, waiting until she was ready to say whatever it was she wanted to say.  He would take the yelling or screaming or whatever it was she felt the need to do to make herself feel better,
"Could you please have your blood drawn to see if they can use it for Mac when she has her surgery, please?"  He nodded his head,
"Sure, you don't have to ask me that."  She looked over at him and regretted making that statement.  There were alot of things he should not have not been told, asked or made to regarding his daughter that he didn't do.  She sighed and pointed the nurse's station,
"Just tell her you want your blood tested for MacKenzie Garner."  She walked off and left him standing there.  He went over to the desk and smiled at the nurse,
"Hi, I'm here to get my blood tested...for MacKenzie Garner."  She nodded and pulled out a folder,
"Are you of any relation to her?"  He stood there for a moment trying to get the words out, they weren't even this hard when he had to say them for the first time, to Howie,
"Um, I'm her father."  The nurse simply nodded as she wrote something down, she didn't seem to give a damn and it was like some huge buildup and then a major letdown.
"Ok, follow me."  He looked around as he walked down the hallway with her, wondering if father was somehow stamped on his forehead now that he had admitted it.

Nick was sitting in the passenger seat when he looked over at Larry,
"Before we get something to eat I need to get a new cell phone."  Larry nodded and pointed,
"There's a mall over this way, is that cool?  And you can get something to eat."  Nick nodded and watched the city go by as the sun began to set,
"So, you ok?  You've been quiet since we got here."  He turned to Larry and turned the radio down,
"She hates me."  Larry didn't take his eyes off the road but Nick could see a change in his demeanor,
"I don't know what to say?"  Nick sighed,
"Yeah, I know she has every right but do you think she'll ever forgive me?  I mean, maybe she will.  She has before."  Larry shook his head slowly,
"I don't know man.  This is a big deal.  She called to tell you your kid was in the hospital and you just shrugged her off."  He knew it was a nasty thing to do, but it wasn't because he didn't care, he was just scared.  He didn't know what to do.
"Hey can I use your phone real quick?"  Larry nodded and pointed towards his phone that was sitting on the backseat.  Nick needed a friend, someone who he could talk to, he could talk to Larry but his friendship with Larry was a little different.  Besides, Larry was friends with Quinn and that would only put him in a bad situation, caught in the middle and he didn't want to do that to him,
"Hello?"  He smiled,
"Hey Josh, it's Nick." He had to pull the phone back from his ear,
"Man, where the fuck have you been?  You missed a concert last night?  Are you in Toronto?"  He shook his head,
"No, I'm in Miami and I need you to get here."
"What the fuck are you doing in Miami?  What about the tour?"  Nick lay his head back, he knew if he didn't tell him now Josh would pester him and refuse to come to Miami,
"Do you remember Quinn?"
"Quinn?  No, who is that?"
"Remember about a year ago, remember the black girl I was messing around with?"  Josh laughed,
"Oh yeah, and her boyfriend walked in on you guys."  Nick rolled his eyes, leave it to his friend to remember that,
"Yeah, yeah.  Well, anyway she has a daughter and she's mine."  Josh screamed,
"What?  Do what?  Are you serious?"  Nick sighed,
"Yeah, I'm serious."
"How do you know it's yours?"  It was a fair question he guessed,
"I know, she's mine.  Look, I need you to come to Miami, she's sick and she has to have surgery.  I need you to come hang with me man."  There was silence and knew Josh was taking it all in,
"Don't fuck with me dude."  He was getting a little angry,
"Dude, I'm fucking serious.  You think I would walk off tour for nothing."  He told Josh the hotel he was staying at and told him to call him on Larry's cell phone when he got into town.

They were back at the hospital that evening, in the waiting room when Elliott walked in.  It was the first time he had seen Elliott since he got to the hospital and his stomach turned in all directions.  Did he tell Quinn that he threatened him to be here?  His heart raced as he turned his head to avoid further eye contact with Elliott.  Elliott went over and sat next to James and began to talk but every time Nick looked over Elliott's eyes were on him.  He couldn't take it anymore and stood up,
"Where you going?"  He shook his head at Larry,
"Just gonna walk around, it's cool, stay here."  He walked out of the room and leaned against the wall, his eyes closed as people rushed by with their routines.  His life seemed to have halted in place, stuck in confusion.  He felt someone next to him and opened his eyes to see Elliott staring at him,
"Glad to see you made it."  Nick sighed,
"Did I have a choice?"  Elliott shrugged,
"Of course you did.  I wont bother to tell Quinn the only reason you're here is to save your reputation and not because you give a damn about her daughter."  He was so tired of this, he messed up, but couldn't anyone understand what he was going through?
"Look man, I'm sorry but I don't have to explain it to you.  Get off my ass.  You have nothing to do with this."  He was tired of getting lectured by everyone. Everyone had something to say and they couldn't seem to keep it to themselves.
"I have everything to do with this.  Quinn is my friend-"  Nick's voice got higher,
"Well, she's my-"  Elliott growled,
"Your what?  Your toy?  You played her and when you were finished with her you threw her away.  Yeah, she fucked up with the boyfriend thing but you used that as excuse to end it because you were tired of her."  He walked off and left Nick standing there.  He didn't think of Quinn that way.  He never had, is that what they think?  Is that what she thinks?
