Chapter 34

Quinn sat balled up in a chair in MacKenzie's room, when the door opened and a nurse's head appeared in the door,
"Someone named Elliott-"  Quinn lifted her head,
"Let him in please."  She nodded and smiled before leaving the room.  She started to cry all over again when she saw Elliott.  He rushed in,
"Baby, how is she?  What happened?  Is she ok?"  They both looked over at MacKenzie lying in the baby bed,
"I don't know.  She wasn't breathing and she was blue and I called 911."  He pulled her to her feet and wrapped her in his arms,
"What did the doctor say?"  She shook her head,
"They haven't been back yet.  I don't know what's going on.  What if-"  He placed his finger over her mouth,
"No what if's.  We're going to wait for the doctor."  He looked around,
"Where's James?"  She walked off and grabbed her box of Kleenex one of the nurses gave her,
"I didn't call him."  He frowned,
"Why not?"  She shrugged and shook her head,
"He's not a doctor.  What can he do?  I'll call him tomorrow.  You're the first one I called and so I decided not to bother him."  He nodded his head,
"Ok, did you call Nick?"  She began to cry harder and sat back down in the chair, her elbows on her knees, her head in her hands,
"Yeah but his phone just rang and rang then went to voice mail."  He brushed her hair back,
"What about Larry?"  She looked up,
"I didn't even think about that.  They came back with her from her tests and I came back in here to be with her."  She looked up at the clock,
"It's too late now. I'll call him in the morning."  He nodded and pulled her to her feet then took her place in the chair.  She sighed as he pulled her down and she sat in his lap and lay her head on his shoulder,
"Has anything like this ever happened?"  She whispered into his neck,
"No."

Elliott gently woke Quinn when the doctor arrived in the room,
"Is she ok?"  she asked as she struggled to try and look presentable.  He smiled sympathetically at her disheveled appearance,
"Ms. Garner, MacKenzie's oxygen flow severely decreased."  She shook her head,
"Is that...how?"  He looked over her charts,
"There are so many reasons that it could occur, we're still running tests.  Are there any medical problems in your family history?"  She shook her head,
"There is a history of cancer."  She looked panic-stricken,
"You don't think that's it do you?  She's only six months old."  He shook his head,
"No but we need to look at everything."  He turned to Elliott,
"And the father's family history?"  She spoke up quickly,
"He isn't the father.  I'm not sure, I'll have to call him.  I won't be able to get in contact with him until tomorrow morning."  He nodded,
"The sooner we know, the better.  We're going to keep MacKenzie until her tests are back.  And we want to have her looked at by a couple of the hospitals specialists."  Quinn could no longer stand and Elliott helped her into the chair,
"What kind of specialists?"  The doctor walked over to MacKenzie,
"Cardiologists."  He read the machines that were hooked up to Mac's little body,
"Her oxygen intake is still little less than I would like but it's nothing to be overly concerned about at this point."  He turned to Quinn,
"Are there any questions you have for me?  Anything you need?"  She shook her head but it was evident she was in a trance and didn't consider the question.  Elliott stepped in,
"Can we get a couple of extra blankets so she can get some sleep?"  He nodded,
"Of course.  Will you be sleeping here as well?"  He nodded,
"Yes, I will."  He nodded as he looked around the room,
"We'll figure out the accomodations."
