Chapter 17

Quinn had convinced Nick that they would talk about Mac later but she just wasn't in the mood at the moment.  They were sitting around that night watching one of the Scream movies when Quinn sighed loudly,
"See?  Black person dies first.  We would never put ourselves in the position to get killed first."  Nick laughed, "What are you talking about?"  Larry was laughing over on the chair and Quinn looked at him,
"You know what I'm talking about don't you Larry?"  He nodded,
"Hell yeah."  Nick sighed,
"I don't."  Quinn turned to him on the couch,
"White people are the ones who go in the middle of the cemetary at two in the morning on Halloween having a keg party while performing a seance.  Black people don't do that shit.  We get killed in the movie theatre and you're a-ok someone place your ass shouldn't have been in the first damn place."  Nick laughs,
"You're crazy."  Quinn shrugged,
"It's true you just never notice.  The black people always die, always."  Nick frowned as he thought then smiled,
"Brandy didn't die in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer."  He sat there, proud of his comment.  She rolled her eyes,
"That's because Brandy was more white than anything."  Nick shrugged,
"So you don't have to worry, you'll be fine."  She frowned,
"Are you trying to say-"  She didn't bother to finish her comment before she jumped on him and they began to wrestle.  He penned her arms down and looked at her softly whispering,
"We need to talk."  She looked down and back at him briefly before nodding her head,
"We can talk in my room."  He nodded, stood up then pulled her up,
"We'll be back man then we can go."  He followed Quinn into the room and closed the door turning to see her sitting on the bed,
"So, why did you lie?"  She took a deep breath,
"I don't know.  Guess I wasn't sure how you would take it."  He nodded,
"Are you sure...I've never gotten anyone..."  His words trailed off as he looked down at his hands in his lap,
"I'm not a whore Nick.  I know I messed up by not telling you about John but I know you're the father.  Do you want a blood test?  Look, you came here I wasn't knocking on your door with a baby on my hip and my hand out."  The longer she talked the more upset she became,
"If that's why you came here...to insult me, you can leave."  He shook his head,
"No, I didn't I'm sorry.  I'm just trying to understand this.  Did you not want me to know ever?"  She sighed,
"I didn't think that far.  I was scared you would be angry.  Or that you wouldn't think she was yours or you wouldn't believe I was pregnant period that it was just a lie to get you back after what happened in New York."  He sighed and just listened as she went on,
"And what about your career?  The public would have a field day with a Backstreet Boy having a child out of wedlock.  You know that. And there was my own selfish reason of not wanting any of that attention."  He nodded,
"Is that all?" He was kidding but she kept going,
"I was a little afraid I would tell you and you would believe me but you would run out and not be a man about it.  I have this fairy tale way of thinking when it comes to you and a little of me didn't want to see that the prince was really a frog."  For the first time since they walked in the room he was angry.  For her to question his manhood was a blow,
"Thanks for the fucking confidence."  She looked up at him,
"I'm sorry, I didn't say you were I just said that's what was in my head."  Nick shook his head,
"But what did I ever do that would make you think I'd run away and do something like that?  Is that what people think of me?  That I'm some asshole who can't be responsible?"  She shook her head,
"No, I just...I was scared and alone...my hormones were all over the place.  Please Nick, don't take it personal.  You're here now even when you didn't have to be since I told you she wasn't yours.  Most guys would have ran off and never gave it another thought after being given an out like that.  You're more of a man than most.  I'm sorry." He nodded as he ran his hand through his hair,
"So what now?  I guess I need to give you some money."  She just sat there, her arms wrapped around her own waist,
"Give me your number and my lawyer will get in contact with you."  She nodded and stood up, finding a pen and a piece of paper, writing down her home phone number,
"Do the other guys know why you're here?"  He shook his head,
"No, I just told them I had to take care of some personal business."  She nodded and deep down it hurt a little that he didn't tell them why he was coming.  She shook it off, he wasn't sure himself until he got here, why tell others.  They walked out of the bedroom and Nick walked into the nursery.  The glow of the nightlight made it possible for him to see her, just barely.  Quinn decided to leave him alone with Mac and joined Larry,
"You guys ok?"  She smiled,
"I think so.  Thank you Larry."  She pulled him up and as Nick returned he watched them embrace,
"I'm glad he knows."  Larry nodded,
"So am I."  He saw Nick standing in the entrance way,
"You ready to get out of here?"  Nick nodded his head,
"Yep, I'm ready."  She walked them to the door and waved goodbye.  Maybe it wasn't going to be so bad with Nick knowing about Mac.  Mac would have her father in her life to the very end, she believed in Nick.
