Prologue
He sat there in shock as he ran over in his head what he just heard, "Ok, so that's it? No one has anymore questions? Nothing more to add?" He looked around as everyone shook their heads, "Hold on, this single we're going to do. When and for what movie?" Nick's eyes wandered over to Kevin as he asked his question. Thank God for Kevin, he thought. Kevin was still thinking about business and he could barely complete a sentence. One of the talking heads of the record label spoke up, "If a movie should happen to come up, we'll figure it out. We don't have a movie in mind." This was all so unreal, he couldn't believe this was happening, "So, we don't know what kind of song? Are we going to get together to record it?" Oh and God, thanks for Howie too, "No, we'll pull something from the songs that didn't make the last album unless something should come up in the mean time." David, one of the members of their management team stepped up, "The song is just to keep you guys on the radio and in the public's head, it doesn't need to be GRAMMY worthy. Just something with legs to last a few months." Nick ran his hand over his face. They always talked about down time, taking a break but he couldn't believe it was actually going to happen. What was he going to do with all this time off? He wanted to be able to come and go as he pleased, not wake up with an alarm clock, not be told what to do, when to do it and where to go but now that he was faced with that reality it scared him to death. He looked around the table, no one else seemed to be distraught. He was always the one who hated being without the other guys, who was depressed when he wasn't in the spotlight they complained about so often. Did he want that one thing they talked about all the time? Could he handle not hearing people scream for him? Being the center of attention, being adored? He was staring down at the huge oak conference table they were all sitting around when he heard his name, "Nick? Nick?" He looked up and scanned the room to see who was calling his name but it was of little use because everyone was staring at him, "I'm sorry, what was that?" he stammered as he looked around. Brian sighed, "Do you have any questions?" Nick shook his head, he had a million but why bother, "No." Yes, he did. Like when are they going to start recording again? Will people forget about them? Don't they know what it's like for him when they aren't together? He stood as everyone else stood up, shook hands and walked out the door. That was it, just like that, they were now on hiatus for one year, twelve months,fifty-two weeks, three hundred sixty-five days. Ok, hours, minutes and seconds he would have to calculate later because God knows he had nothing but time.
