Chapter 10

To say he was somewhat nervous upon his return to New York would be a bit of an understatement.  He knew eventually he would have to stop obsessing over the loss to the Red Sox but now wasnt the time.  It was only November; it hadnt been long enough in the grieving self-pitying process.

He walked through the airport with Steve, a friend who had come to pick him up.  He didnt have a problem with being on a plane by himself but from the airport terminals on he always had someone with him.  He never went too many places alone because there was always some idiot around the corner waiting to act like a fool.

Whats this commercial for again?

Gatorade.  This was the only reason he was coming back to New York; work related.

Where are you going now? Want me to drop you at home?

Yeah, home will be great.

You going out tonight?

The last thing he wanted to do was go out.  He was always the toast of the town when he stepped out into the bright lights of the Big Apple but there was no way he would be feeling any love from the city right now.

No, its going to be a quiet night in.  It was going to be a quiet night in but it wasnt going to be a night where he was alone.

**

If you need anything let me know.

He nodded before getting out of the car.  Thanks man, see you.

Having the private garage entrance and a private elevator they went up to his apartment has been a savior for him in more ways than one.

**

The doorbell rang and he opened it to see her standing there.  They werent officially together anymore but she was a beautiful backup.

Hi.  She stepped forward and kissed him on the corner of the mouth.

Come on in.  Im sorry I didnt call you back.  It hasnt been the best of times.

I understand.  I didnt want anything  I just wanted to see how you were and give a little support.

Derek took her hand and led her to the couch.  Sade was softly playing and a bottle of Cristal was on the table near them.

She placed her hand on his thigh and smiled at him, So how has it been?

Everyone knew losing was tough for him.  It may seem ridiculous but four years without a World Series ring was hard to take especially since he won four in six years.  It was all he knew.  He knew he didnt take any of those championships for granted but he did feel like they would keep coming.  The last four years was like payback for the success they had; and the world was getting a big laugh at them.

Not easy.  He placed his hand on her own bronzed thigh, How have you been?

Ive been well.  Went on a few auditions.  I just had one today for a new series.

Vanessa already had a job; she was a VJ for MTV.  It wasnt a relationship that had any chance of being serious.  For a while, he was somewhat exclusive with her but it wasnt long before he realized she wasnt enough to fulfill whatever it was he needed.

Well good luck with that.

She smiled, filled the glasses and handed him one.  He allowed her to pull him off the couch and they stood in front of the window and took in the view.

Derek I can never get enough of this view.  It has to be the best in the city.

He was high above the ground in Trump Towers.  It was Donald Trump, of course it had to be the best.

He wrapped his free hand around her tiny waist and placed his hand flat on her stomach.  She leaned back onto him and he lowered his head nuzzling her neck.

You smell so good.  He moaned.  His tongue ever so lightly ran across her skin.  Her arm came up and she ran her fingers through his hair.  He broke the kiss and took the glass from her, placing it on a table nearby.

He grabbed her hand and pulled her towards him.  She looked up at him with eyes full of adoration.  His arms wrapped around her waist and her hands ran up and down his chest.

She licked her lips, Have you been thinking about me?

Of course.  Actually, he hadnt given much thought about her until he knew he was coming back to New York so it wasnt a lie.

As they kissed she kicked her shoes off.  He lifted her so they continue to kiss as he moved them to the bedroom.  They fell on the bed; he was halfway on top of her and she was on her back.  One of her legs was up and he ran his hand from her knee to underneath her small skirt.  Both of her hands were just as busy as they ran wildly through his hair.

He climbed off her and positioned himself on his knees, tugging at her skirt.  She helped him remove not only the skirt but also her tiny flesh colored thongs.  It wasnt long before she was completely nude.

He stood up and removed his clothes as she lie in wait looking more and more inviting with every article of clothing he removed.  Waiting for him as usual was condoms and he grabbed one out of the drawer of the nightstand by his bed.  He moved towards her and her legs opened for him and her arms reached out to me.

He lay on top of her and kissed making sure not to get so caught up that he entered her before he put on the condom.

**

He woke up and she was resting peacefully on his chest with his arm underneath her.  He pulled her close and rubbed her arm affectionately.  She was a nice girl but like Carmen, she could be a bit shallow.  Lately, the women in his life just werent doing it for him.  But he didnt think it was their fault.  They were who they were.  Maybe it would be better if he didnt date someone in the entertainment industry.  Entertainers, whether famous or not, had similar personalities and egos.  It was probably why his friends with the most successful marriages had wives who had absolutely nothing to do with the entertainment industry.
