| Chapter 85 The hell with this thing. Hopefully, Sarah will be so busy she won't notice that I've barely been around. I've been around, took just enough pictures so people would know that I was there. The rest of the time was spent dodging people and this entire event. Just as I walked back through the door I locked eyes with Sarah who was standing in a huddle with Nick and Rebecca. I couldn't walk away, I had to go over now that she saw me. As I made my way over all I really wanted to do was run away with Doug. Who I'd managed to sneak off and have a few small conversations with throughout the night. "Brehan, I've barely seen you all night." I shook my head, "It's ok sweetie I know this is a big night for you. Don't worry, I can take care of myself." A photographer came over before anymore useless conversation could be spoken, "Can I have a picture of you guys?" I nodded, "Sure." I'm sure I would be the only one in this group of wonderful people who would even think of saying no. We all stood in a small semicircle, Nick in between Sarah and Rebecca and with me on the other side of Sarah and smiled as he took a couple of pictures. Not only am I not in the middle of this damn picture, I should be the center of attention, but I wasn't standing near the guy, I'm looking like the odd person out, the hanger-on. Sarah turned to Nick and Rebecca, "We're going to get ready for the auction. Nick someone will be out to get you soon and bring you back." I looked around, bored out of my fucking mind, and watched as Rebecca wrapped her arm around Nick's arm, "Let's get a drink and keep you loose for your big moment. Remember, I'll be betting on you." I looked at her and Nick, they seemed to be quite comfortable with each other, then looked at Sarah who didn't seem to mind. I've been a little put off by the excess of sweetness since Sarah slept with Nick, and it was only last night, but I didn't do all that working and planning for Rebecca to get him. As we walked off I turned to Sarah, "What's up with your friend?" She turned to me with that ever present smile on her face, "What? Who?" We made it through the door and one of the security guards closed it behind us, "Rebecca. Is she into Nick?" She giggled, "Brehan." I can't believe after all I did to hook her up with him she's going to let someone else have him, "Wait, so you're ok with that?" She shook her head and for the first time that smile faded as she placed her hand on my arm, "No way. Brehan-" She looked around the room to make sure no one was listening, "I like Nick. There's something there. I can't say what just yet but I think this can be the real thing." Ok, that was a little more than I ever thought would happen. I figured they would have some good sex and that would pretty much be the end of it but I guess I'm an even better judge of character than I thought, "So what? You guys are hot and heavy now?" She shook her head and smiled, "Look, I'm not saying all that. If it is possible I don't want to jinx it. I'm just saying he's a nice guy and I'm not looking to let someone else have fun with him yet. If nothing else we'll have a little more fun if you know what I mean. We'll probably just see each other when he's in LA." I guess I was overreacting. Not even Sarah would fall for someone so quick. I mean this is the girl who was banging her personal trainer for a while. She tapped me on the arm and pointed towards the other side of the room, "Come on, let's go over this one more time." Does she think I'm a trainable monkey or just plain stupid? How many times do we have to go over this? I can't wait for this to be over. I smiled as the third bachelorette, an up and coming actress, was finally won by a pervert that was old enough to be her father. I looked down at my notes and saw that Nick was next. "Our next bachelor is a last minute subsitution. He was nice enough to step in after one of our bachelors had a family emergency. Luckily, Sarah knew where to find him at three in the morning." I glanced over at Sarah but she wasn't amused, it was just a harmless joke. I shrugged as everyone else in the room seemed to appreciate my humor, "He's Nick Carter. So let's pull out those platinum credit cards ladies." He stepped up and strutted down the catwalk. Actually, it was more like sprinted, before I knew it he was back at the mark looking as petrified as a worm on a hook. Well, he was bait after all. The glasses were a nice touch, they didn't make him look like a kid quite as much, "Of course you can all see the blonde hair, the blue eyes and the tall broad body but what you can't see is that sweet voice. Girls, I'm sure he'll sing if you ask him nicely." I described his voice as sweet but was it? I've never heard him sing before which might seem a little odd but it's not like I'm some fan of little boybands so it doesn't really matter. "Well, we start the bid off at five thousand. Do I have any takers?" An older woman, I guess in about her thirties raised her paddle, "Five thousand. Do I have fifty five hundred?" Yet another woman didn't hesitate. I can tell Nick was relieved someone bidded on him. He actually had a small smile on his face. As every bid got higher and higher I could see his posture begin to relax. Just as it looked as if he would be sold to some ugly old broad with an awful face and an even worse body Rebecca added herself to the mix, "Nineteen five." I have to hand it to Nick, even when it looked as if he were going home with the Wicked Witch his smile and calm look never faded and he didn't get excited when Rebecca rescued him. Before I could ask the crowd to up the amount there was another bid, "Twenty thousand." I looked over in the direction and I was a little shocked at first. It was Jill. "Twenty thousand five hundred." Rebecca wasn't wasting any time. They begin to bid back and forth and my eyes went from Jill over to Sarah and Rebecca like I was watching a tennis match. I know there is no way one wants to lose to the other, they absolutely hate each other. According to Sarah, Jill once slept with Rebecca's boyfriend. She was hot and heavy with this guy, wanted to marry him and all that shit. If it weren't for the fact that Sarah had a serious dislike for Jill she and I would probably be friends. She always seemed like a cool enough girl to me, never did anything wrong towards me but Sarah is very much about loyalty and hanging out with Jill is not worth losing my friendship with Sarah. "Twenty five thousand." I can't help but smile, it looks like Jill really wants what she wants. I looked over at Rebecca who was visibly unhappy about her rival but nodded in defeat as Sarah whispered something in her ear. Sarah, always the high road traveller. There's nothing wrong with a little competition, I was curious to see how far they would be willing to go. I am kind of surprised Sarah doesn't give Rebecca the rest of the money just to keep Jill's finely manicured hands away from Nick. "And the gentleman is yours." She pranced onstage and smiled as she and Nick posed for a picture. I could see the look on Sarah's face and happy was not it. Chapter 85 contd Stranger Than Fiction Stories |
