Brainstorm's Current Topic: The Cloning of Household Pets, February 16, 2002

The people of our generation are generally pressured by society to mindlessly and immediately say that they do not support cloning and that it is immoral. Quite frankly, cloning doesn't bother me at all unless it is done to clone a full human. I mean, before I go off deeper into this topic, I'd just like to ask you all, how many of you cannot sleep at night because this issue bothers you so much? This isn't something I'd lose sleep over. But still, just because something does not directly affect us, it should not mean that we shouldn't care at all.

Instead of letting people spend years and years over where to draw the line, I'd say we draw the immorality line. I personally wouldn't mind if someone used cloning to repopulate an endangered species, but only if it was dying as a result of humans. If they would become endangered without our damaging presence, we should not. I also wouldn't mind if somebody used it when one was in need or blood or an organ. But it should not be made into a way to market organs and blood. That just wouldn't be right. Then again, cloning organs and cloning endangered species to repopulate them could be seen as us trying to act like God. Well, I suppose. But you could call all forms of medicine and medical practices "trying to act like God". We could just live like it's the Middle Ages and let fate decide when the first cold we catch takes us out. So I draw the line here. We do not clone to reproduce a full animal or human that can be its own creature. No mutations or other abuses should be allowed either. I know that there is no black and white answer for issues like these, but we've got to pick a point somewhere in the middle of the spectrum and take a stand. I really wouldn't mind exploring the possibilities of science. It's a brave new world, after all.
