I have been a telepath ever since I was a young girl, but because I could not control this ability, Charles Xavier found a way to block me from using it until I was at an older age.
However, I also had the ability to move things around with my mind, the power of telekinisis. As I learned to control my telekinedic abilities, I was not aware of the telepathic abilities that Xavier had blocked from my use.
Technically, I was Xavier's first student, although I didn't attend his school until I was much older. At that time I was known as Marvel Girl. I, thankfully, abandoned that name and simply went by Jean Grey.
I am still learning how to use my powers. If I ever over used my abilities, I would turn into the alien life focre known as The Pheonix. As The Pheonix, I have no control of myself or my powers, causing me to be very careful.
Sadly, I passed on this terrible ability to mine and Scott Summers' daughter, Rachel.
