Colonel just over a year ago. Top Gun was a very good movie. It had drama, action, comedy, and other great qualities of a good movie. But it did more than entertain a bunch of people, it brought a whole new look on military aviation. Before Top Gun only men whose families had been in the military had interests in the military. Some thought of flying a jet much like driving a bus. Not the best job in the world. But when Top Gun was released thousands upon thousands of people wanted to fly jets. People want to fly them, fly in them, work around them, work on carriers, and so fourth. Jets are now seen as high preformance airplanes which can bring them 60,000ft high, at speeds of over Mach 2 (F-14 and F-16 can go 1500mph, F-15 can go 1700mph, F-22 can go about 1750mph) and give them a roller coaster like ride. People consider it fun and entertaining. The Air Force and Navy would be in a major pilot shortage right now if it hadn't been for Top Gun. Top Gun is a major reason why people want to work in jets, around jets, and on jets. Top Gun was a great contribution to military aviation. What are your opinions on Top Gun as a movie and its contribution to Military Aviation? PS. If you'd like to contact me, my e-mail is colJakeLiberston@military.com ************************************************************************************************* re: Top Gun helping Military Aviation David 1:03 am saturday august 4, 2001 Hello Sir: I am sorry about my previous post. I accidentally posted your message on the board w/o my reply. You are absolutely right about "Top Gun" and what it meant to the armed forces, the Navy, in particular. I am 30 years old and was 16 at the time of "Top Gun"'s commercial release. Just about everyone in my high school wanted to be a pilot after watching the movie in 1986. Today, we need more movies like "Top Gun" to enhance our patriotism to this great country. Unfortunately, today's generation cannot identify w/ a movie such as "Top Gun" just as I can't relate to World War II movies. Some of them are spectacular, no doubt about it, but nothing I can connect to. Perhaps there will be a "Top Gun" sequel! First of all, this person, Courtney, obviously has never passed an english class since the third grade. Though she does capitalize the first letter of her "sentences", and puts some type of punctuation at the end, I am baffled. Why would someone who obviously cannot write a complete sentence not only attempt to do so, but also attempt to sound half-way intellengent? Not only are her sentences a gramatical mess, but her points have no basis for intellectual stimulation what-so-ever. I am so pleased that someone has finally built a web-site that not only shows what an outstanding movie "Top Gun" is, but also brings to public attention the fact that there are mistakes in the movie. Mind you, I did use the word MISTAKES. That is because they are. Who said the things that are wrong with “Top Gun” are mistakes…try saying the US Navy…???????? The fact that the government puts regulations on how accurate movies can be is no excuse for not having information that is obviously free to everyone. If “Top Gun” is not about Naval aviation, I’m not sure that we are talking about the same movie. Perhaps you would like to bring me up to speed with what part of the movie doesn’t have to do with Naval aviation (beside the part that is dedicated to Tom Cruise having sex in order to sell the movie to teen-age girls…which is usually the downfall of a perfectly good military movie.) Hollywood doesn’t know crap about the military, which is obvious after watching most of their portrayals of anything military. Anyone who is at all interested with having an informed opinion about anything knows that you have to be able to constructively critize even things that you love. This message was obviously written by a little girl, so infatuated with Tom Cruise that she “can’t handle the truth” about “Top Gun” who likes to pretend that she was an 80’s child…1988 doesn’t count sweetheart. Whoever choses to believe that they are simply Hollywood's opinion of how things should be, is a complete and blubbering idiot. I question how, in an age where information is literally at our fingertips, someone could still be so utterly uninformed. I consider people who have this much trouble distinguishing fact from fiction useless American flesh. Attaining knowledge about how our country is defended (like, if the planes used in movies like "Top Gun" actually exist or not) is as important and should be as second nature as knowing the words to the National Anthem. In conclusion, if you have nothing intellegent to say, don't speak at all, let alone post messages on a site where people with half a brain try to get an opinion from someone who matters. If you can't read, write, or debate appropriately, please make your new motto "i am so smart, smrt...", and find your way to a country where people don't mind being bored with useless babbling... ************************************************************************************************* Mistakes and madness squid 2:48 pm monday december 10, 2001 Whooooooooooooooh momma. I know it says "dedicated to" at : the end, but was that actually a pilot? Thanks for your time Yes. Art Scholl, stunt pilot, was killed doing an inverted flat spin for this film. His last transmissions, uttered at 3,000 and then 1,500 feet, were, "I've got a problem" and "I've really got a problem." It is speculated that camera equipment affixed to the plane altered its weight-and-balance envelope, making recovery from a flat spin (normally difficult in any case) impossible. ************************************************************************************************* Good job with site Cmdr. Cool site Good Job! ************************************************************************************************* Courtney vs. Goose Claudio 11:05 pm thursday april 4, 2002 First of all, I hate when girls get offended because a guy points out mistakes in "your favorite movie". It's probably your favorite movie because of Tom Cruise and because it's exciting. It's also spelled AERIAL. "Hell they landed on boats that is naval. Still that is not naval combat" First of all they are SHIPS not BOATS second that is Naval air combat. Naval aircraft are as much navy as any ship and are considered a crucial part of Naval combat."Goose" had some good points about things that were wrong. "I would now like to reiterate that it was not NAVAL combat. I have taken this up with my local recruiter and he told me that it was ARIEL. (for Naval would be submarine and big boats. NOT PLANES!) Yes there was a naval aspect to the film." You obviously know nothing about NAVAL AVIATION. A NAVAL ASPECT? BIG BOATS? Ughhhh. Ignorance sucks. "Goose" had some good points about things that were wrong but he obviously is lacking knowledge on the topic as well. Top Gun is a Navy training school not necessarily an institution. The best Naval aviators are selected for the school. "As I said before...aerial combat is done at great ranges...not in your face like the movie". Wrong again my friend. We do have missles that are to be used at "stand off" ranges but there is plenty of air combat done at close ranges. Why do you think we have schools like Top Gun and short and medium range missles? Long range missles don't always hit their target, do you think a Bandit is going turn around after you run out of long range missles? Don't think so. "They have no air to ground capabilities and can lock on to targets from great distances" Tomcats have air to ground capability and are currently demonstrating their capability in Afghanistan. Now I'm not knocking Top Gun. It's my favorite movie of all time and is my inspiration for becoming a Naval Aviator. There were many mistakes in the movie but it's ok, it's hollywood. And many Hollywood directors want to get some level of accuracy, that's why Hollywood has military liaisons and technical advisors ************************************************************************************************* top gun george bright 6:30 am friday april 12, 2002 i think i am one of the biggest fans of top gun along with my friends dose any one have the soundtrack two like me ************************************************************************************************* Music: help ! Top Gun : is translated= Fighter Weapons School. Oh dont doubt me i am a : pilot. Ummmm....alll I have to say is WHATEVER. Just read my web page, I think I know what Top Gun is. Of course it's naval combat. Courtney was arguing that it had nothing to do with the navy. Anyways, I'll say it again, mistakes pages are there to enhance the enjoyment of the movie. The more mistakes found in a movie usually points to the movie's popularity. Just look at the amount of mistakes found in "The Phantom Menace" or the new "Spiderman" movie. It's all in fun and I hope my web page captures that spirit. Courtney wasn't talking about TopGun as a real institution. She was talking in vague terms. Meaning that Top Gun had a direct importance in our lives. All I said was that TopGun was great, but it didn't have the dramatic impact that she claimed it did. Yes, there is a Fighter Weapon School, but that was not the point being argued. Check my web page and you can find information on the Real Fighter Weapon School. Thanks for writing. Goose Stop and Think Ocean Pacific 7:21 pm thursday may 23, 2002 This whole war between Goose and Courtney needs to stop. I see that Courtney hasn't written for a very long time and this whole thing needs to just be dropped. There are bigger wars going on in our world after what happened on September 11 and there is no point in arguing over if there should be a mistakes page or not. I do not know HOW the whole thing over if its a aerial combat movie or not got started from mistakes but really some of us are just not kids anymore and we all should not be so self-centered and act like the world revolves around us but think of those innocent people over in the Middle East getting bombed on because Al Queda did something bad and they might not have even liked the rulers of their countries. I mean, come on. Lets just not have to fight over silly things likes mistakes in a movie made 16 years ago and think of thosse who lost their family or friends. What kind of world are we coming to? We need to stop and think about that question more often. I have respect for both Courtney and Goose, but stop the fighting and focus on more important things. Thank You, Ocean Pacific P.S Goose, great site. I come here everyday. Keep up the good work. P.P.S I am aware that it was more a debate than a war, and I also know that people will criticize me for what i say, but I just felt that it needed to be said. No hard feelings for anybody who disagrees with what i think. ************************************************************************************************* re: Stop and Think Goose 12:29 pm saturday may 25, 2002 :This whole war between Goose and Courtney needs to stop. I see : that Courtney hasn't written for a very long time and this whole : thing needs to just be dropped. There are bigger wars going on : in our world after what happened on September 11 and there is no : point in arguing over if there should be a mistakes page or not. : I do not know HOW the whole thing over if its a aerial combat : movie or not got started from mistakes but really some of us are : just not kids anymore and we all should not be so self-centered : and act like the world revolves around us but think of those : innocent people over in the Middle East getting bombed on : because Al Queda did something bad and they might not have even : liked the rulers of their countries. I mean, come on. Lets just : not have to fight over silly things likes mistakes in a movie : made 16 years ago and think of thosse who lost their family or : friends. What kind of world are we coming to? We need to stop : and think about that question more often. No hard feelings for : anybody who disagrees with what i think. It's all in good fun with my debate with Courtney. Sometimes it's nice to look back at something that you love (ie. Top Gun) which lets you escape the horror that we see everyday on CNN. Anyways, in respect to this comment. "innocent people over in the Middle East getting bombed on because Al Queda did something bad" I sure hope that is not the case. The bombing campaign is not trying to bomb the civilians in Afghanistan but rather the terrorist network. That's not to say that mistakes will happen. I'm sure there has been many mistakes done, but it still doesn't diminish the overall point of the campaign. That is, to disrupt the Al Queda network enough to lessen its ability to wage future terrorist attacks. Anyways, thanks for writing and I'm glad you enjoyed my webpage. Are Pilots going to be replaced? Goose 12:18 pm saturday may 25, 2002 Here's an article that appeared on CNN's Webpage. _________________________________________________________ LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A prototype of the first robotic plane designed specifically for combat missions made a successful maiden flight, officials said Thursday. The Boeing Co.'s X-45 flew for 14 minutes, completing a wide oval above Edwards Air Force Base in the California desert before landing on a dry lake bed. "It performed just as expected," said Rich Alldredge, Boeing's X- 45 program manager. Boeing's Phantom Works in St. Louis built the plane for the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Air Force. The military sees such aircraft taking part in its most dangerous missions, usually in initial attacks to suppress enemy air defenses. X-45 combat drone Length:27 feet Width:34 feet Height: 3.7 feet (with landing gear retracted) Empty weight: 8,000 pounds Fuel capacity: 2,690 pounds Payload: 1,500 pounds Operating altitude: 35,000 ft. Cruise speed: Mach 0.8 (about 600 mph) Can be transported on C-5 or C-17 aircraft Source: Boeing.com During Wednesday's flight, the sleek, tailless jet flew to 7,500 feet and reached a top speed of 224 mph. The plane flew autonomously on a programmed course, with a ground-based controller commanding it only to change its airspeed. Its landing gear remained locked in place during the flight. The plane, with 34-foot wingspan, is the first drone designed specifically to carry weapons into combat, a role the Air Force sees the eventual larger production versions being capable of by 2008. Other robotic planes, including a spy drone called the Predator currently being used in Afghanistan, have been modified to carry weapons. At least five of the propeller-powered Predators have crashed since the United States began its anti-terror campaign in Afghanistan in October, but Glenn Buchan, a senior defense analyst with the Rand Corp., said that robotic planes have not flown long enough to assess their performance. The Predator, he said, was hustled into combat while still under development. "It looks like these things have a lot of promise and we are relatively bullish on them for a lot of applications, but there are a lot of bugs with them, as there are with all vehicles, and the way you work them out is by flying them," Buchan said. Leahy said the X-45 would "hunt in packs," carrying up to 3,000 pounds of guided bombs to drop on enemy radar and surface-to-air missile batteries. Officials hope to fly a swarm of the planes by late 2003. "We believe it will transform the way we fight wars in the future," said David Lanman, who is responsible for UAV technology planning for the Air Force Research Laboratory. Boeing hopes to build hundreds of the planes, which would cost $10 million to $15 million each, about one-third the cost of the next-generation strike fighter. Boeing recently lost a contract to build those piloted planes to competitor Lockheed Martin. ______________________________________________________________ In my opinion, there is still a lot of room for Human ingenuity. While drones could fly at g-forces that would tear a human apart, I still think that the ai equipped within them would be no match to a human dogfighter. What does everyone else think? ************************************************************************************************* re: End of an era. Are Pilots going to be replaced? Merlin 12:56 pm monday may 27, 2002 These drones will be used as bombers becuase they are cheap and will minimize human casualties, but I don't think human fighter pilots can be replaced with machines. ************************************************************************************************* TG anthem sheet music D 3:50 pm thursday june 6, 2002 hi, i have been looking for sheet music for the Anthem or Danger Zone. "Ocean Pacific" seems to be arguing that people have lost perspective. In fact I would argue that it is people like him (or her) who have lost perspective. For pity's sake, a bit of jovial fun on the internet has nothing whatsoever to do with world events. At worst I would say it even belittling the enormity of such events by drawing comparisons with such trivial matters. People seem to think that what went on in NY is relavent to every topic of conversation going. It isn't - get a life, grow up and get over it. Think about something else. By the way goosey baby, the new mistakes are gems, the more obscure the better! keep up the good work. ************************************************************************************************* re: I am in the navy i been to top gun charlie R 11:10 am thursday july 25, 2002 "this sight is great i been to the real top gun and i been a fighter pilot for 8 years now from vossler" Hmmmmm..... does anybody else agree that maybe Vossler is telling porky pies?! He can't spell, or put a sentence together. He is however, a fully trained USN fighter pilot, capable of handling one of the most complicated pieces of machinery in existance. Its either absolute twoddle, or quite terrifying, I'm not sure which! *************************************************************************************************
