. [Unterm Rad is a famous novel written by German writer Hermann Hesse. Hermann Hesse's novels are categorized as lyrical or criticizing modern civilization.](1) [Before World War 1, his novels were lyrical. Experiencing World War 1, he began to think that there are big problems in modern society, so his novel written after World War I, and it is criticizing modern educational system.](2)
. [This novel is about Hans Giebenrath, a victim of modern educational system. He was an excellent student and entered a very good seminary. At the beginning he adapted his school life, but started to think ot the school as a place where he could not endure, as he began to get along with a new friend Hermann Heilner. Hermann quit the school, and Hans began to suffer a nervous breakdown.](3) [Consequently, he too had to quit the school because of his illness. After going back to his hometown, Hans met many people and began to work as an apprentice. After some time, on the way back home, he fell into a river, drunken.](4)
. [Hans was a victim of modern educational system. He was a gifted student, but he enjoyed playing in natureswimming, fishing, playing with his rabbit, etc. also. However, he was forced tostudy, forced to go to the seminary and suffer a strict schoollife there. His friend Hermanns's spirit was harmed by strict school life, too.](5)
. [We can find Hesse's point of view about education in this novel. He suffered similar situations as Hans experienced. When Hesse was a boy, he went to a seminary, suffered under a strict and inhuman school life, and quit the seminary just like Hans did. He thought that children should not suffer working hard, but should play in nature.](6)
. In conclusion, Unterm Rad is a novel protesting against modern educational system. After experiencing World War I, Hesse's novel began to criticize problems of modern society. He suffered similar situation that the protagonist Hans Giebenrath, which made him attack modern educational system and advocate playing in nature. I agree with him. Children should study, buth they should not study too hard, and should enjoy extracurricular activity also. Let us think of the axiom "All study and no play makes Jack a dull boy." We won't be whold men if we study only.
