45 "An Affair To Forget"

Cut Scenes

  • The brief scene where Niles has to get a piece of the model from Eddie was not in the script.
  • After Niles glues the model to his hand, there was a brief bit cut where Niles tells Martin off for not reading the instructions, specifically the one that says "Avoid contact with skin"!
  • Frasier says he needs to talk to Martin - "It's about Niles." Martin adds that he "can't tell you how many times I heard that from your mother." A few seconds later, Frasier repeated the main parts of the story to Martin - "German fencing instructor...wealthy new client...?" - something he didn't do in the show.
  • Roz asks Frasier whether Martin wants to go on the date. Frasier told her in the script that he would, if not for "the problem with the horses". When Roz asks what he means, Frasier replies, "The wild horses that aren't strong enough to drag him out of the apartment."
  • After Frasier realises that the Nichteinmenschlichfrau is Maris, he says "Oh dear God, it is her!". In the show Gretchen doesn't hear that, but in the script she does, and Frasier has to cover it up for her.
  • Act 2 begins with a title card saying "An Affair To Forget" in the script only.
  • Frasier's conversation with "Maris" (unknown to him, it is really Niles) is a bit longer in the script - he asks "her", "You are in there, aren't you?" as well as a few other bits.
  • The scene where Frasier tells "Maris" he will come and get her out, even if she is naked ("I'm going to count to 3 and I don't care if you're naked.....I'm going to count to 10!") was not in the script.
  • When Frasier realises Marta thought Niles was "Missy Crane" and tells her he is "Mr Crane!", Marta practises saying "Mister" to herself. Afterwards, Frasier offers Niles a towel, whereas in the show Niles just says, "Marta has problems with her pronouns."
  • Whilst waiting for Niles to arrive, Frasier tells Martin that Niles called on a car phone, and that he was "...breaking up - in both senses."
  • A small cut scene had Frasier suggesting that maybe Maris was "in love with one person and still....infatuated with someone else?" - hinting this to Niles - of course, this could describe Niles' attitudes to Maris and Daphne. Niles then added "First Poland, then France, now me." for things defeated by Germans!
  • Later, Niles wonders if he should "sit tight" and maybe the "whole thing will blow over." A few seconds later, Martin suggests that Frasier go get the letter Niles wrote for him, and off he goes. In the script, Frasier decided to get it himself.
  • Only in the show does Niles react when he sees how much taller Gunnar is than him.
  • The description of the fencing match between Niles and Gunnar is much, more detailed in the show than in the script! For example, Niles doesn't run upstairs, and Gunnar doesn't hit the Ming vase in the script.
  • After Frasier realises he mistranslated, there is a brief scene where he and Niles have an overlapping bickering session. In a funny line, Niles says that "Maris is not footwear!".
  • Niles' line, "Give me 5 seconds, then tell him he's fired," was not ion the script.

Major Dialogue Changes

  • When Roz interrupts the show with her "advice", Frasier tells Gretchen it is "[her] lucky day" in the script, but says "You're in luck" in the show.
  • When Frasier signs off, after saying, "Dr Crane & friends", he added in the script, "...with more advice and fewer recipes."
  • After Frasier says Martin will be available for the blind date, Roz said in the script, "Oh, this is great. She'll be so excited," before asking Frasier, as she does in the show, why blind dates are OK for Martin but not for him.
  • After Frasier asks Niles whether he will be spending the evening with them, Niles' response is slightly different in the script. After Frasier says that "Maris wanted you out of the house, huh?", Niles said in the show, "Like a musky smell,", but says in the script, "Like a Jehovah's Witness."
  • Frasier tells Martin that his blind date has a "terrific personality" in the script, but says "wonderful" in the show.
  • Frasier's story about the caller is phrased slightly different in the script.
  • In the show, Frasier said, "so I had to go in and steal his ovaries", but in the script he says, "so I snuck into his bedroom and stole his ovaries."
  • The second time Gretchen calls is phrased slightly differently at the beginning of her call. Frasier fins out Gunnar's name a bit earlier than he does in the show.
  • In the show, Roz asks Frasier, "You know who the liver dumpling is, don't you?". But in the script, she says, "leberknodel".
  • Roz says, "Didn't they teach you anything at Harvard?" before "You never tell the person....." in the script, but afterwards in the show.
  • Frasier, about talking to Maris, says "Oh no, that's out of the question" in the script but "I can't do that," in the show.
  • "It'll only add to his anxiety" in the show was originally "It'll only fuel his anxieties" in the script.
  • A cut line had Martin saying to Niles, "That's OK son. There's nothing wrong with taking your time figuring out the best way to handle this." right before Niles revealed he'd driven to the Oregon border.
  • Line cut from the script - Martin says, "Frasier's very smart, very sincere and very divorced."
