Floods Ravage Indiana; More Rain Possible

  • "FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) � Severe storms flooded central Indiana with as much as 10 inches of rain on Saturday and spawned tornadoes that ripped off roofs and flipped tractor-trailers in Wisconsin and the Chicago suburbs.
    The floods in Indiana threatened dams, inundated highways and forced the Coast Guard to rescue residents from swamped homes. To the northwest, residents in the Chicago area ran for cover as tornadoes touched down throughout the region.
    The storms caused a few minor injuries in Wisconsin, and at least one injury was reported near Chicago. No deaths or injuries due to flooding were reported in Indiana.
    Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana declared an emergency in 10 counties as the Coast Guard was called in from the Great Lakes to help with the flooding, which forced hundreds of people from their homes.
    Ninety percent of Paragon, a town southwest of Indianapolis, was underwater, said the state�s homeland security director, Joe Wainscott.
    Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, south of Indianapolis, experienced some flooding, but no patients had to be moved, said a Johnson County commissioner, Tom Kite. Water reached the windshields of cars in the parking lot of the county government building, Mr. Kite said.
    The Indiana State Police reported evacuations in the Lake Lemon area, about 10 miles northeast of Bloomington.
    Interstate 70 was closed in Clay County in west-central Indiana, and Interstate 65 and another major route, U.S. 31, were closed near Franklin...."

  • "SOUTH BEND, INDIANA (ANS) -- A locally-based humanitarian agency has mobilized a 48-ft semi tractor-trailer loaded with emergency food to help hundreds affected by Indiana�s worst flooding in modern history.
    Severe thunderstorms and flooding have affected 29 counties, as farmers, residents and businesses are trying to cope with the flooding.
    The South Bend, Indiana-based Feed the Hungry will ship a variety of ready-to-eat items including canned chicken, dry soup cups, canned soups, noodles, crackers, cookies, pasta, along with tortilla chips.
    These items will leave the Feed The Hungry warehouse Wednesday at 8:00am and arrive Wednesday at noon at Morgan County Fairgrounds in Martinsville, IN, about 32 miles south of Indianapolis
    The distribution efforts will be coordinated through Gary Page, of Hoosier Harvest Church in Martinsville, IN.
