Good Charlotte Say "Teenage Suicide Dont Do It!"
|
For their most recent single, Good Charlotte have decided to stray away from their usual lighthearted videos and introduce a more serious tone for a very serious topic. "Hold On," the last single and video from the bands 2002 release The Young And The Hopeless, is a call to action against suicide.
| The punk-pop outfit has addressed the issue through song and video in response to the many letters theyve received from young fans that say theyre contemplating suicide. The video is a message for these fans, telling them that they are not alone. Joel Madden, Good Charlottes singer, issued a statement about what the band wanted to get across through the video. "Its our goal that this video gives hope to our fans that have reached out to us, and maybe it will reach some who dont know us," says Madden. "Even if it is just one person, if it makes a difference in their life, it was worth the time, effort and money it took to make. Life is not something we feel anyone should give up on." The band also attributes the initial idea behind the video to close friends and other people who have succumbed to negative life pressures and have taken their own lives. The deaths of people like Kurt Cobain (which is coming up to its 10-year anniversary), Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley and the recent suicide of singer-songwriter Elliot Smith have all affected the band and inspired them to produce this hopeful song and video. For this video, Good Charlotte enlisted the help of Sam Bayer, who coincidentally enough also directed Nirvanas "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The band also teamed up with the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, which could be the reason why the video has a public service announcement feel to it. The video includes footage of real people who have been affected by suicide, from people who have lost someone close to them, or kids who have actually attempted to take their lives, to pictures of young people who have committed suicide. 11/24 5:35 pm send feedback
