SCI-FI

My favourite kind of shows on TV.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

`As long as there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. One girl in all the world,to find them where they gather and to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their number. She is the Slayer.`

`Buffy` wasnt always the hip success it is now. Before the show aired, there was often a certain amount of derision involved in conversations about it.A cheeleader named Buffy who slew vampires.I sounded a little goofy, truth be told. But the first time you saw it,you just...knew.

Joss Whedon has proven to Hollywood that it isnt impossible to mix action, comedy, drama, and horror and still have a compelling hour-long show...in fact, one of the most compelling on television.Critics fall over themselves naming it one of the best shows on the air.

Starring the lovely Sarah Michelle Gellar it has become my favourite show, and its success has produced a spin-off for David Boreanaz`s character `Angel`.Soon there will be an animated `Buffy` series and a Watcher series based in England for Giles(Anthony Stewart Head). All hail the `buffster` and the `slayerettes`(or `scooby gang`)  .:+)

Star Trek

`Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Her five-year mission:To explore strange, new worlds:to seek out new life and new civilizations:To boldly go where no man has gone before...`

These words, first spoken on TV on September 8,1966,gave the world its first glimpse of Gene Roddenberry`s vision of the future.Since that day over thirty years ago,Star Trek has become the most incredible collaborative effort ever seen in motion pictures, television and publishing-a phenomenon that has inspired 9 films(soon to be 10),4 television series(soon to be 5),and a line of bestselling books.Star Trek`s popularity is astounding;nearly fifty per cent of the American public proudly proclaim themselves to be Star Trek fans!.

I remember the original series from the 70`s repeats, and thought it was great. Now i think the stories are still good but the acting comical,i osmetimes cant bear to watch!.The Next Generation was the one that got me really into the Star Trek universe. It was superb with excellent characters and superb special effects.Deep Space Nine and Voyager followed, although it took time to appreciate these at first, but both excellent series.

My favourite character would always be Data, the android desperate to be considered `human` and i had a soft spot for Jadzia Dax in DS9...yep ok,cos she was gorgeous !.Look forward to the new film next year and the new series `Enterprise`.Looks like Star Trek will be around for a long time.

Other Sci-fi

These are my two favourites but i also watch other sci-fi shows regularly.Farscape,Stargate,Andromeda,Charmed,Xena,Hercules,Cleopatra2525,Poltergeist;The Legacy,Sliders...so many. Most of the time i dont get to see them as much as i`d like, but i love the fantasy, the real world can be dark sometimes. At least these shows give you some escapism and a bright future.

Below is a photo of some of the sci-fi memorabilia i have, mostly Trading Cards and photos.I love reading the novels of Star Trek and Buffy and also Star Wars. Also i like reading Terry Pratchett`s `Discworld` and Douglas Adams `The Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy`.Some people may say i am detracting from real, life when i watch sci-fi and fantasy, far from it,i think it makes me a more rounded person and more tolerable of the crazy world we live in.I mean, why watch `soap operas` all day on TV..to depress you even more about real life. :+)
