The grass grew on its own
in our backyard
although summer had already run its course
we looked at it
picked out rocks
neatly stacked scattered pieces of wood
into a corner of the yard
I built a bench and a table
from the wood.
We cut the grass with a weed eater.
Unfortunately,
It all grew before we had smoothed
the ground underneath and there were
humps and bumps
underneath.
Our neighbor's little girl picked wild flowers,
until there weren't any left.
The yard was sunshine and grass.
Our son ran around it with a ball
in his hand.
We sat on the $1.00 bench, thinking, perhaps,
that good things, indeed, come cheaply sometimes.
It seems
as if
We never go inside anymore.
