My Technoliteracy Background...
The Beginning Years...
I grew up in Big Bear City, California, which is about as boring a town as can be for a teenager. No, I didn't ski that much. Because of the isolation and lack of activities I developed an above-average interest in video games and computers. Okay, so I was pretty geeky for awhile. Here were the beginnings of my education in technology, software and hardware use.
1982-1984
Okay, I was a bit melancholy when I received my first video game system way back in 1982. I was outdoing all of my friends who had that cheesy Atari 2600 with the boxy graphics and bonky sounds, but felt I was still inferior to my spoiled friend Robert who ended up with the ColecoVision with all the extra gear. Probably the game I remember the most was "Sea Battle". It was sweet dropping mines around the archipelagos and watching the enemy battleships run right into them! Oh yeah, I can't forget running home from Radio Shack and playing "Pitfall" for the first time either. Alligators....just like Indiana Jones!
1984-1988
All things considered, I think I began with a pretty solid background in computer literacy. I was interested in computers from a pretty young age. When I was about thirteen years old, my dad bought a Commodore 64. This tan and brown beauty (kinda resembles a lumpy mudpie, doesn't it?) kept me occupied for hours at a time.I learned how to write in BASIC programming and began using a word processor for the first time. This was really exciting. I would spend hours writing really bad short stories, heavily influenced by Stephen King and the Penthouse magazines stored at the bottom of my desk drawer.
