Family History...
When I was growing up, things were a bit crazy at my house. My Dad was married three times before I left my house to go to college. He was a successful auto mechanic and gas station owner, who did pretty well for himself, despite our difficult family situations. My dad wasn't a reader and I don't really recall having books read to me when I was young. There were no newspapers or magazines lying around the house, unless I brought them home. I've always wondered where I picked up such an interest in reading, because it seems like it was there from day one. It wasn't pushed on me. It seems like it is something I must have picked up outside of my house....
Becky
My first mom, Becky, was the book keeper for my Dad's Union 76 Station. They were married for about 12 years and gradually things fell apart. My Dad was spending alot of time working and my mom had bi-polar disorder (undiagnosed until the 80's). The combination proved fatal for the marriage. During this time, I remember several nights, lying by myself in the living room, reading books about the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot and other current faves. I also discovered the technology of the record player around this time. Becky had a pretty decent record collection. I would lie in front of the fireplace with headphones on, listening the the strangely fantastic Moody Blues Album, "In Search of the Lost Chord". This was almost halleucinatory music and maybe helped me become the music fan that I am today. The needle cutting into a vinyl platter and the wild stuff that flowed from it really had an impact on my imagination...
