SALUTE YOUR SHORTS
PLOT-A acollection of short films by West Virginia-based indie filmmaker Eamon Hardiman.
VIOLENCE-Does stabbing a stuffed rabbit count?
SEX/NUDITY-Well, there's kind of one clothed sex scene, but it ends with an alien abduction.
WHY I WATCHED IT-I like warped, bizarre, off-the-wall humor. The more original the better. This is that.
THE DOPE-It'd be easier if Eamon Hardiman made just one type of movie in just one category, or just one style, but he doesn't. The material in SALUTE YOUR SHORTS ranges from the GUMMO-like TEENAGE DIRTBAG to the completely indescribable RIBOFLAVIN, but all of it is entertaining, and hey...I can't say I've ever seen anything like it. One thing's for sure, Hardiman showcases a firm grasp on humor, and presenting great comedic ideas to maximum effect. The standout effort in this bunch, appropriately enough, was done by Hardiman completely by himself. In WEEKEND, he plays a man who comes home to find his wife gone, and is jazzed to have the house to himself for a couple days. However, when he scores hard drugs but can't find anyone to share it with, he goes ahead and has a party of his own. This is without a doubt one of the funniest skits I've ever watched! It was not only a great concept, but the little details of Hardiman's performance (he accidentally sticks his finger in his eye while he's on the phone, and tries to play it off) are really what makes it brilliant. In keeping with all the other films contained in SALUTE YOUR SHORTS, it has a style all its own and induces many many laughs. You know it's good when you want to play it for everyone who comes over to your house.
MEMORABLE SCENES-In one of the several ABDUCTION shorts, a vulgar, loud-mouthed woman refuses to stop telling stories, much to the dismay of those around her. I won't reveal what happens to her, but I will say that this lady is a goddamn riot. You have to see it. You just have to.
