Lorenzo Cherubini, better known by his stage name Jovanotti, is one of Italy’s biggest modern, musical export. He began his career in the late 80’s where he was better known for his old-style hip hop beats. He recorded music a la Salt n’ Pepper for much of the early 90’s till he reached international success in 1994. After selling big with his hits piove (rain)  and penso positivo (I’m optimistic), Lorenzo started to record his first albums in Spanish and soon after began to work with other high-profile artists, including Bono (U2), Pau Dones (Jarabe de Palo) and Pavarotti himself.

During the past 5 years Jovanotti has become a pioneer in avant-garde musical composition. After years of traveling around the world, his music has become heavily influenced by brazilian rythyms, jazz instruments and synthesized sounds. One trait of his music remains intact though – his catchy ability to rhyme strings of words for verses on end. If you don’t speak Italian it’s a big loss, but his music is still something out of the ordinary.

Over the last few years, Jovanotti has increased his political and social involvement and this has led him to become, among other things, one of the main promoters of the Campaign for the cancellation of the public debt owed by Third World Countries alongside U2’s Bono. In the eyes of certain critics, this is a far cry from the young man who in the late 1980s entertained hundreds of radio listeners for hours on end emulating Robin Williams in "Good Morning Vietnam".

Piove is perhaps his best sold record, and by far one of his catchiest. It can be found in the TV series The Soprano’s soundtrack. However, it is only a fraction of the musical variety in Jovanotti’s repertoire. Other songs that I really recommend: Salato parte uno, Salato parte due, Salvami, Per te, Stella Cometa and Serenata Rap.

Hai visto che piove, guarda come viene giù

tu che dicevi che non pioveva più

che ormai non ti saresti mai più innamorata

e adesso guardati sei tutta bagnata

e piove madonna come piove

sulla tua testa e l'aria si rinfresca

e pioverà fin quando la terra non sarà di nuovo piena

e prima o poi si rasserena

piove senti come piove

madonna come piove

senti come viene giù

senti le gocce che battono sul tetto

senti il rumore girandoti nel letto

rinascerà sta già nascendo ora

senti che piove e il grano si migliora

e tu diventi grande e ti fai forte

e quelle foglie che ti sembravan morte

ripopolano i rami un'altra volta

questa è la primavera sulla porta

e piove madonna come piove

piove, senti come piove

madonna come piove

senti come viene giù!

Rain

You’ve noticed how it rains, just see how it’s pouring

And you said it would never rain again

That you would never fall in love again

Now take a look, you’re soaking wet

And it rains, Madonna how it rains

On your head while the breeze refreshes

It will rain till the earth is replenished once more

And then the calm will come

Rain, feel how it rains

Madonna how it rains

Feel how all the rain drops fall

Feel the raindrops beating on the rooftop

Feel the noise as you toss and turn in bed

It will rebirth, its rebirthing now

Feel how it rains and how the seeds improve

You become big and become strong

And those leafs you thought were dead,

Are now repopulating branches once more

This is springtime knocking at the door

And rain, Madonna how it rains

Soon the sun will come out to celebrate as well

Feel how it rains on your head

And you thought that your plants

Had dried up and wouldn’t grow again

You did wait a while, but feel how it rains

On your head, feel how the raindrops slide

Hadn’t you given up already,

And said you would never fall in love again?

The earth sometimes will hold its tears back,

But wait and see, the rain will come again

Rain, feel how it rains

Madonna how it rains

Feel how all the rain drops fall
