Taller and Smaller
I was working at the store today.
It was quiet; a slow, sunny Saturday,
when two little girls came in.
Wide eyes looking
at the bright trinkets
and other astonishing things.
One just a babe
the other a little older,
no more than two years separate,
both with blonde hair curls
in pink.
The picture of childhood
on Mother's hip
and trotting by her side
with another dip and a bulge
at her belly.
They cooed at the colors
the smaller now mobile
took her turn on the carpet.
Little feet in crazed directions.
Calm but enthralled,
just taking it all in
watching the hanging glass twirl
far above.
Then Taller turned to Smaller
asked "Give me have a hug?"
wide arms in the air
the turned head
"No." said Smaller
not malicious, just confident.
"No?" puzzled Taller.
Mother called daughters
it was time to leave the store
and the moment was gone.
But for me
they will remain
my favorite part of the day.
