Spoken
Poems are born to be read,
they said,
aloud.
Scribbled on any paper,
remembered on any tongue
by any heart
lighted, recited, uprighted-
by any delighted or affrighted audience
without a glance
to their subtle construction...
I disagree;
not all poems are meant to be spoken
some poems are meant to be seen.
What is a beautiful woman
described but never viewed?
Words belted from the gut travel through auditory systems
and are then forgotten
halfly begotten, now rotten,
confused, and misconscrued
in humans' feeble minds.
Before you condemn all to the mic
and thrill those wide-eyed ears
with rhythms untamed
give it a thought,
give it a scan,
not all poems are meant to be spoken.
