* Common ancestors are the Pekingese and the lion dog (ancestor of today's Shih Tzu).
* Some names for the pug have been: Foo dog or Fu dog, Lo-Chiang Sze, Lo-Chiang, Pia dog, Hand dog. Also Mopshond, and Dogullo.
* The word "pug" was a term of endearment. Pug also meant demon, imp, sprite, monkey and ape. Later in the Oxford English Dictionary, pug meant "a dwarf breed of dog resembling a bull-dog in miniature".
* Probably the most famous pug was Fortune, belonging to Josephine, wife of the emperor Napoleon. Fortune but Napoleon on the leg on their wedding night. Years later when the unfortunate Josephine was imprisoned at Les Carmes, Napoleon sent love notes to her hidden in another one of her pug's collars.
* Other famous pugs have been seen in movies: *Otis - The Adventures of Milo and Otis; "Percy" - Pocohantas; "Frank" - Men in Black; "Sam" - TV's Big Brother.
* Black pugs were developed in Japan in the late 9th or early 10th centuries. From there the black pugs' spread to other parts of the world. Some of the earliest black pugs, as well as some of the modern fawn and black pugs were decorated with patches of white in their coats. White markings can occur in all colors, with the feet and chest being the most common. The only time white markings are highly undesirable is in the show pug
* In China, solid black puppies were considered to be bad luck and most were destroyed at birth.
* There are two known versions of today's pug: English and Victorian. The "Engish" version are more compact, have shorter legs, thicker build, and a flatter muzzle. The "Victorian" version have a lankier, thinner build, longer legs, and more of a narrow muzzle. Also, the Victorian type tend to be more hyepractive. No matter what your pug looks like, he will still capture the attention of all who see him.
* The flat face causes the pug to snore.
***There are 10 different colors of Pug. Although these are registered by AKC, not all of them are registered as the Pug's true color. The colors AKC uses is set forth by the Pug Dog Club of America which only recognizes Fawn, Silver/fawn, and Black. Nor are all of these colors accepted by all Pug fanciers. We embrace ALL of the Pug colors and find these differences make them all the more intriguing!
