| ever since Dot Baker lost her husband Ted she's tried to keep his memory alive, but when John Kershaw turns up on her doorstep, she can't blame her kids, Katy and Colin, for wanting another man about the house. John is a kind and caring man who'd do anything for the Bakers, in whom he finds the warmth of a loving family. He's only too happy to step in and save their neighbour Mary Campbell from her violent husband. To treat Colin to comics and trips to the cinema; and to encourage Kate in her budding romancewith Billy Harlow. He even managers to bring an occasional smile to Dot's face.
