Week Thirteen Comments
In week thirteen we finished with the Impressionists. We briefly glossed over, to my disappointment I must admit, Neo-Impressionism. Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cezanne are among my favorite artists. The Neo-Impressionists were named by art critics, because they weren't as concerned with the fleeting effect of light, but painted in same brushy manner.
The bulk of the discussion concerned revival art groups of Germany. The Lukasbund and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood sought to revive German heritage by creating art reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Scenes like Rosetti's Annunciation and Overbeck's two-dimensional cut away buildings mimic the Middle Ages rather than emulate in my opinion.
