Week Eleven Comments

We began week eleven discussing the Impressionists. The Impressionists painted reality, fleeting reality. Their dissolving brush strokes implied the image, and focused usually on effect of light. After their 1874 exhibition at Nadar's studio, the Impressionists had successfully formed their own economic partnership and a new anti-Academic art movement.

Impressionists were deemed radical by some, attempting to uproot traditional art, but in reality their original motives were financial. Their exhibitions compete with Salons.

I enjoyed learning about the motives and origins of the Impressionists as an organization, and not just a focus on formal qualities.
