What did ya do, L'il Angel Reb?

A long time ago, I made a promise I'd keep
I wouldn't laugh, nor would I weep
I tried real hard and that promise I kept
Until one night I woke to find I'd wept

Don't cut those curls, and keep your hair long
Always remember that you are strong
There are no if's, and there isn't a but
Promise me, Darlin' your hair you won't cut
I kept that promise, but I was getting old
All these locks were losing their hold
Why did I promise him; perhaps it was love
Now I know he's watching me from above

The weather was cold, but then it got hot
I just had to do it before I forgot
Too much to do, and people coming down
I wouldn't laugh, nor would I frown
I just had to do it, I couldn't wait
I didn't want to be early nor late
Then I sat quietly in the chair
Hoping for just a breath of fresh air

Nerves were all tangled, and I was so frail
Thought I'd rather go to the County jail
At least there I'd get three square meals
I didn't want to leave any trail
