Science - Our Moon
Did you know that our moon was created when a planet named Orpheus collided with Earth? That is what scientists believed happened millions of years ago. Scientists also think that without our large moon, life on Earth would never have started.
The moon helps the earth to spin on its axis, taking 24 hours to go around one time. When the moon was first made, it was a lot closer to earth. Back then, a day only lasted 4 hours! The moon also helps us not to wobble around while we are spinning on our axis.
Scientists believe that the moon is moving an inch and a half away from the earth every year. If the moon were ever to leave earth's orbit, the earth would stop spinning around. Some places would have constant sunlight and other places would stay dark! The earth would also begin to wobble on its axis. The North and South Poles could point directly at the sun. The polar ice caps would melt and the oceans would get higher and higher. The cities near the coasts all over the world would get flooded. However, scientists are pretty sure that this will take at least a few million years before it happens!
We are lucky to have our moon!!
Current Event - The Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace Prize started because of Alfred Nobel and his invention of dynamite. After he invented dynamite, he felt so sad that he gave away all the money he had earned from the dynamite for five special prizes. Four of the prizes are for chemistry, medicine, literature, and physics. The other prize is the Nobel Peace Prize for somebody who works hard for peace. The prizes are given out every year.
This year Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize. Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States. He was President from 1977 to 1981. After he was the president he started The Carter Center which tries to bring peace to people all around the world. They also try to keep people healthy all over the world. Jimmy Carter also helps build homes for homeless people in a group called Habitat for Humanity. Congratulations to Jimmy Carter!
