Book Review
The Journal of James Edmund Pease

    This is an excellent book about the daily life of a Civil War Union soldier named James Edmond Pease. It is written like a journal which makes it seem real.
     James was 16 when he was a Union soldier and many of the other soldiers were very young, too. James was asked to keep a record of what happened in the "G Company" from New York and that is why he writes the journal.
     In the journal, James writes about their hard everyday life and the battles they fight. There are exciting moments like when James and his company fight the Confederates and James almost gets shot in the head! During a huge battle between the Union and Confederate armies, James gets separated from his company and ends up behind enemy lines! Will he make it back? Evening Beach
The tide comes in, the tide goes out,
Finding shells left all about.
Birds search them for tasty treats inside,
Tiny little crabs dig a place to hide.

The sounds of the waves crashing on the shore,
While high above gulls dance and soar.
I listen to their happy call,
The shadow of me grows quite tall.

The setting sun is getting low,
Clouds in pink, red and orange glow.
In this world I'm just a part
Yet so peaceful am I in my heart.
Monthly Math Challenge
    We had a long drive to Hilton Head Island. Here's a challenge to see if you can figure out our average speed for our drive through Virginia.(The speed limit there was 75 MPH)
At 12:34PM we entered Virginia and the odometer said 195.1 miles. We stopped for gas and lunch from 1:30 to 2:15PM. At 4:45 we were in North Carolina and the odometer read 393.1 miles. What was our average speed during our drive through Virginia?
         (Answer will appear in next month's challenge.)
Answer to November's challenge:
    (7 + ( 5 x 7 ) ) / ( 7 - 1 ) + 3 = 10
                         or
     7 + ( 5 x ( ( 7 / 7 ) - 1 ) ) + 3 = 10
