GPCA Newsletter September 2001

GOLDSWORTH PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
GPCA NEWSLETTER. SEPTEMBER 2001 VOL. 21. NO. 9.

Created Tue 28/Aug/2001 Update Sat 17/Nov/2001

IMPORTANT! Please read the disclaimer on the home page.

Also available at Forbuoy's Newsagent shop at G.P. Centre and through your letterbox! This was printed at the beginning of the month and some events may be out of date by the time you read them!

FLOWER SELLING

Most of you will know Philip the Flower Man (who has the stall outside Waitrose). We understand that he may soon be unable to continue trading. Philip has occupied his current site for over five years and has become a familiar part of life on Goldsworth Park. However, the managing agents, FPD Savills, intend to terminate his current licence and to issue a new one. Unfortunately, the new rent they propose is to be increased to \u00A3175 per week plus VAT, which represents an increase of 40%, and we understand that Philip will find it increasingly impossible to continue trading at this new level of rent. Over the years, Philip has become one of the few charitable institutions on Goldsworth Park and has always been ready to provide support to the community, which has sometimes been in short supply among the centre traders. If he has to cease trading he will have to relinquish this service, which is much appreciated by many young, old and disabled residents. He sells his flowers and pot plants at a reasonable price. If you have a view on Philip’s service to the community, please contact us.

Editor’s Note: After an amicable agreement since this article was written, Philip is staying outside Waitrose. He told us, " It is wonderful to be part of such a warm-hearted and caring community, young and old. It is also nice to know that you are appreciated by the local people. I can’t buy everybody a drink so I will make donations to local charities as a token of my appreciation of your support.

FOUND

A pair of glasses was handed in to us at the Car Boot Sale on August Bank Holiday. Contact 714096.

GOLDWORTH PARK ALLOTMENTS SOCIETY

On Saturday 25th August the Goldsworth Park Allotments Society held their Annual Flower Show at Brookwood. Exhibits totalling 231 entries covered flowers, vegetables, wine, bread and cakes, and a children’s section. Among the prizes and cups was the Derek Robinson shield (presented by the GPCA with monies bequeathed by the late Derek Robinson). The first winner of this shield was John Arkinstall.

GOLDSWORTH CARE

Goldsworth Care is a voluntary organisation being established to offer neighbourly help to those in need of assistance in the Goldsworth area. Owing to the illness of a key member of the steering committee, Goldsworth Care have recently revised their launch date and will now be going 'live' during November 2001. As a result of this revised schedule, Volunteer training will now be taking place during October. This consists of a single, informative and fun one and a half hour session. Both daytime and evening sessions will be held. At the moment, all volunteers are being contacted and interviewed to ascertain availability and type of tasks they are prepared to undertake. References and vehicle/insurance details* are also being checked and, most importantly, any queries or concerns are being addressed. Naturally, more volunteers would be welcome - if you feel you might be able to offer even the smallest amount of help please contact Penny on 832857 or Paul on 850371 or email: info@goldsworthcare.org.uk The Goldsworth Care Steering group is also in need of interested people to join the existing committee to help plan the launch and management of this great new scheme - contact the people above for more infomation.

* Before a volunteer can undertake a task that entails driving Goldsworth Care must have copies of insurance and MOT details. This is to ensure that all clients are transported safely and legally, and to comply with the organisation's own indemnity insurance. There is a standard letter for volunteers to send to their motor insurance company requesting permission to use their vehicle whilst on voluntary business. There is not usually any additional charge for this.

WOKING MEDIATION SERVICE

Just a reminder about the existence of this service which, with support from Woking Borough Council and Surrey Police, deals with neighbour disputes, whether regarding noise, barking dogs, boundary disputes, etc. For details contact the Co-ordinator on 301010.

BEAUFORT COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Kirkland Avenue, Goldsworth Park, Woking GU21 3RG. The Surrey & Hants Border League club kicks off its season on Sunday 2nd September with both teams looking to enjoy a successful year. The first team, which finished 3rd in the top division last time around, will be looking to break the domination of the Guildford-based clubs, whilst last season's Division 3 champions, GPR Reserves, will be trying to join the club's first team by getting promotion from Division 2. Although the club have managed to retain the majority of last season's players, five new signings will ensure a more competitive selection problem for the teams managers. Our biggest signing, though, is a new sponsorship deal with the Robin Hood Public House, which is sited on the outskirts of the Park. Team members, opponents and supporters alike are most welcome at this friendly venue, where landlady Tammy Renouf and her staff have already made a big impression during our pre-season friendlies. Weather permitting, home games kick off at 10:30am on Sundays on Goldsworth Park Rec. All support is very welcome at the game or in The Robin Hood afterwards.

EXTENDING YOUR HOME

So many of us yearn for more space at our elbows, whether you have been blessed with a growing family or you are just finding that your accumulated furniture has filled every available inch of floor space. The choices seem to be: 1) Engage offending children/elderly relative/sofa in a battle for territory that you can't hope to win or 2) Sharpen your sinews and face the prospect of moving house, with the exciting challenges of new neighbours, new schools, new job, new pub...let alone finding enough newspaper and cardboard boxes for your every earthly possession. But what if you are happy where you are? Happily, there is a third way. Extending your home enables you to find that extra space without the great migration and all its heartache. Goldsworth Park falls into a special category with regard to extensions, in that most of us cannot benefit from what is termed 'Permitted Development', i.e. the building of an extension of less than a certain volume. In order that housing density on Goldsworth Park can be carefully controlled, it is deemed necessary for construction of any scale to require planning permission, be it a small conservatory or a two-storey brick structure. There is no great mystery about applying for planning permission. You will require scale drawings of your property showing it as existing and as proposed. These can be fairly basic but, unless you have had previous experience, it is advisable to get someone to do the drawing for you. The drawings are then submitted in quadruplicate to the Planning Department of Woking Borough Council, along with the relevant paperwork and an application fee. The council then has eight weeks in which to grant or decline permission for your extension. Once you have gained planning permission, you can proceed with the nitty-gritty of construction. If the extension is to open directly into the existing house (without an external door in between), or is particularly large, then it will need Building Regulations approval. Building Regulations are intended to ensure that your extension complies with good practice by way of construction, thermal insulation, ventilation and so on. They require the production of detailed construction drawings by an architect or technician, and regular inspection of the building site by an officer of the council. This part of the process can be expensive in itself, so it is best to establish at the design stage whether this approval is required. If you are sure that it is not, then you are free to start digging your foundations, and good luck! The above is intended as a rough guide to the process of obtaining permission for your building work. If you would like more information or advice on extension design and drawings for Planning or Building Regulations approval, please contact Martin Gardner Architectural Services on 769512.

COME AND SING WITH WOKING CHORAL SOCIETY

Have you ever thought of joining a choral society and take part in this very rewarding and interesting, not to say therapeutic activity? If you are tempted, but have simply not plucked up enough courage to do something about it, then now is your opportunity. And if you decide to become a member, we ask you to take a simple voice test. This is not an intimidating audition and you do not need brilliant sight-reading ability. Many people find that their musical skills improve rapidly once they sing regularly in a choir with others. We specialise in classical and contemporary musical works. The two major concerts involve a full orchestra and professional soloists, whilst the summer concert is sometimes of a lighter nature. We are a friendly group and very proud of being Woking's oldest choir founded as long ago as 1896. For our forthcoming season we have planned three concerts. 8th Dec 2001 and 23rd March 2002 are the first two and details are to be found on the website. The third is Britten - "Rejoice in the Lamb", Parry - "Songs of Farewell", Monteverdi - "4 Part Mass" at Christ Church, Woking on the 29th June 2002. We rehearse under the baton of Nicholas Steinitz, our conductor, at St Andrew's Church, Goldsworth Park on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30pm. The season's first rehearsal is on Monday 3rd September, but you can join us at any time during the season. For further information, contact Mrs Jerry Crowsley, our Chairman, on 829366 or Mrs Susan Nichols, our Hon Secretary on 767852, or visit our website on www.wokingchoral.org.uk.

FIRST PRIZE

Horsell Allotments Society recently won the Tunis Cup for the best allotment site in Woking. Well done Terry and all you gardeners.

LETTER FROM A VISITOR

I'm here on holiday and every day I drive into the car park for my papers and other purchases. I must give praise to the person or persons who clean the car park to a high standard, that is until I went to the recycling area and saw lots of cardboard boxes and other rubbish dumped there. In my opinion the rubbish there spoilt the otherwise clean car park.
