My criticism at the time was the lack of representation by local residents living close to the lake. My mail tells me that the first meeting of this group was proposed in late September - but still no consultation or involvement of residents in that area. So, watch this space....

LAKERS YOUTH CENTRE

Lakers Youth Centre in Goldsworth Park is now open for business again. This Surrey County Council owned building has been undergoing a period of renovation this summer. The centre opened in 1993 and cosmetically there has been very little done to the building. To keep up with the changing state of Youth Work and in consultation with the young people of GP it was decided to develop Lakers into a Youth Cafe and advice and resource centre along with facilities for a study/homework area. Building work started in July and the first phase of the development is now complete with the Study area having been constructed and now waiting to be equipped with computers, and the whole of the centre's interiors have been livened up with a lick of paint. Plans are now being drawn up for the development of the cafe and it will be hoped that other agencies who deliver services to young people could use Lakers as a point of contact and as a satellite unit. Lakers is now open four nights a week for offering a variety of leisure and informal education opportunities for young people aged from 11 upwards. As well as the building having a facelift there is also a new face down at Lakers. Paul Shimmin is the new Neighbourhood Youth Worker for Goldsworth Park, based at Lakers. Born and bred in the Isle of Man, Paul attended the University College of St. Martin in Lancaster, where he studied Community Youth Studies. He moved to Surrey in May from Warwickshire to work at High Ashurst Outdoor education centre then took up the postion at Lakers in August. For further information Paul can be contacted at Lakers on 727253.

BEAUFORT COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Kirkland Avenue, Goldsworth Park, Woking GU21 3RG. Tel: 714096/835735.

FLOWER MAN

As stated in the stop press of our last edition, Philip is staying. He has reached an amicable agreement with FDPSavill. As a mark of his appreciation for the support he received he has made donations to three local charities. As I have said before, it is gratifying to see a local trader give back something to the local community that supports them.

LAKE A LITTER BLACK SPOT

You will recall that in the August edition of GP News we commented on a RSPCA headline. This branded the lake area as a litter black spot. That bland statement was not specific in any detail. At the time we said "provide details or shut up!" We now understand that some weeks after the headline appeared in the local press a representative of the RSPCA did at last make contact with the local authority. The RSPCA now stated that there have been NO problems around the lake area in the last couple of years. So why make the statement in the first place? During the controversy of this issue I received a telephone call from a lady who was visiting relatives in Oakfield. She stated that during her visit she had read comments about the lake area and had on a number of occasions walked around the lake. She went on to say that on these walks there was not litter in the area and what a lovely spot we all had. Her one point of critism was no public toilets. I informed her that we agree with that comment and had for a long time been trying to get the council to fund the provision of public toilets in the area. Without any success.

STROLLERS COFFEE MORNING FOR MACMILLAN CANCER RELIEF

On Friday 28th September 2001, a coffee morning was held at Strollers as part of the largest coffee morning in the world. The objective was to raise funds to provide support to Macmillan Nurses. It was well supported by a large number of visitors. A picture of some of the smiling faces present should appear in the local press.

GOLDSWORTH CARE LAUNCH DATE NOW CONFIRMED

Despite recent setbacks, we are all both pleased and excited to announce that Goldsworth Care will be launched on Wednesday 14th November 2001 by the Mayor and Mayoress of Woking. The official launch 'party' will be held at St Andrew's Church, Goldsworth Park Centre at 7.30pm with a large cake and plenty of refreshments. All are welcome. There will also be a very short first annual General Meeting, when the Steering Group which has managed it to date is due to be replaced by a new management committee. It's never too late to become a volunteer - contact Penny on 832857 or Paul on 850371.

SPICE UP YOUR FILM LIFE

It is said that variety is the spice of life and variety is certainly what you will enjoy at Woking's New Cinema Club in November. After all, what could be more varied than the double-bill offered by the Club on Thursday 8th November? Starting at 8pm, the entertainment stretches from tough, exciting crime drama to the craziest comedy. Both films are 1930's classics, sensations when they were released. Period pieces now, their vitality and originality have kept audiences coming to see them again and again. James Cagney is "The Public Enemy" who graduates from petty theft to bootlegging before getting too big for his boots. In 1932, a year after "The Public Enemy" hit the headlines, "Horse Feathers" struck Marx Brothers fans as their funniest yet. Who in their right senses would put Groucho in charge of a college? He has two things on his mind - Thelma Todd, the sexy college widow, and its football team. Chico and Harpo help to ensure that chaos reigns and that Groucho's players win the cup. How they do it has to be seen to be believed. The Cinema Club's current season continues fortnightly to next May on the big screen at Mayford Village Hall in Saunders Lane. For more information about times, costs and forthcoming films call 725792 (daytime) or 475745 (evenings) or visit the club's website at www.wncc.org.uk

HALLEY'S APPROACH

Further to my recent letter in the local press about Respite Care at Halley's Approach, I would like to reassure local residents of the following: Respite Care will continue to be available for existing users (Moderate Needs) until January 2002. In the future, respite care will be available at other resources including a Respite Unit, Rodwell Farm, which is nearby in Runnymede. Residents at Halley's approach who reeive care will continue to do so. Please do not worry for they will be properly supported.

Elizabeth Compton, County Councillor, Woking South West.

CRIMEWATCH GP

CARS VANDALISED ON GOLDSWORTH PARK

Police are still receiving reports of cars being vandalised in and around GP and are appealing to the public to get in touch if they know who the perpetrators are. Although the number of reports of tyre stabbings have decreased, someone is causing thousands of pounds worth of damage by pouring some kind of corrosive subsatnce over cars parked in the area. And, as always, there is mindless vandalism such as cars being scratched, windscreen wipers bent and wing mirrors ripped off. If you know who is doing this contact your local officer PC Claire Witcher at Woking Police Station on 761991. Calls can be made anonymously to Surrey Crimestoppers on free phone 0800 555 111. Remember if you see someone carrying out damage, ring 999. With the onset of autumn and the dark evening it's time to review your home security. Don't advertise your absence; use time switches to turn on lights, radios, and other appliances when you are out. This will make it look as if your house is occupied. don't let your TV or video show through a window, and draw the curtains if you are going out for the evening.

DONATE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE

Please give your European currency to Woking Hospice before the Euro arrives in February 2002, after which it will no longer be legal tender. You can take it to the Hospice at Hillview Road, Woking (tel 881750) or any of the 6 Hospice shops.

Thank you, John Quinn

LESS IS MORE

Another ground breaking energy effcient scheme from Woking Borough Council, through its wholly owned company, Thameswey Limited, is about to show that less really is more. The scheme, in partnership with British Gas, will bring homeowners special savings on energy effcient condensing boilers or central heating systems. As well as savings of up to 37% on heating bills, the scheme will also mean less greenhouse gases are emitted as the boilers are up to 90% effcient, compared to 72% for a standard boiler*. As installation is by British Gas, customers benefit from their fully trained expert engineers and comprehensive guarantees**. In keeping with its reputation as a leader in energy efficient initatives, the Council is keen to promote this scheme beyond the Borough boundaries. It is already working with a number of local authorities to promote the scheme to householders further afield and aims to encourage more to take advantage of the initiative. Already recognised as the most energy efficient council in the country, Woking Borough Council set up Thamesway Limited, an Energy and Enviromental Services Company in 1999, to further its enviromental aims. Its energy efficient achievements were recognised this year with a Queen's award for Enterprise - the Council is the first local authority to receive this prestigious commercial accolade. Commenting on the scheme, Cllr Jim Armitage, Chairman of the Council's Executive Committee says: 'This initiative proves that energy efficiency makes economic sense and demonstrates the benefit of working with private sector partners to meet our goals. Thameswey is working with British Gas to ensure quality delivery of energy efficient condensing boilers both in Woking and further afield to bring savings to householders and to the enviroment.' Residents will soon receive a leaflet giving further details about this scheme. If you need to replace your boiler phone 08456 09 08 09.

* Source: SEDBUK efficiency figures from the Boiler Efficiency database published as part of the Goverment's Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme. Figure based on the average lifespan of a boiler (15 years) in a standard three bedroom semi-detached house and on an average UK gas price of 1.3p/kWh (inc VAT) as recommended by the EST in February 2000.

** No guarantee takes away any rights consumers have at law.

GOLDSWORTH PARK RANGERS

What an amazing start to the season - Goldsworth Park Rangers' 1st team served up a warning to rest of the Surrey and Hants Border League by opening their campaign for the season with a resounding 7-3 win against British Rail, who are generally acknowledged as the Man Utd of the Border League! Having now played three games, GPR are still unbeaten and are joint top of the league. The Reserves to date have not fared so well, but it is believed a lot of this is down to a shortage of players due to holidays - results are expected to improve dramatically when a full pool of players are available for selection, which should be with effect from the end of September. At the other end of the scale, do not forget any new youngsters (aged 5-8) wishing to start are welcome to join Mick Burningham on Goldsworth Park Rec any Saturday morning from 10.30 to midday. All players must have shinpads and boots. Training is free. Snacks and soft drinks/tea and coffee are available from our tuck shop. Further information available from the Secretary, John Anderson on 475397 or 07890 624846.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Copyright \u00A9 2000 Yahoo!
