Grub and Grog
These are some of my favorite places to eat. My criteria includes 3 factors: the food must be good, the quantities big, and the prices cheap.
| Pizza Port - I've been going to Pizza Port since it opened back in 1987. It's still the best pizza around. Try the Pizza Monterey, it's the prescription for legs tired from an epic day of mountain biking. If you're looking for a great microbrew, try their Sharkbite Red Ale. | ![]() |
The Potato Shack - This Encinitas breakfast/lunch spot is another favorite of the locals. This place passes both the quantity and quality tests. The pancakes are huge, the potatoes are all-you-can-eat, and the omelettes are overflowing.
Rubio's - Home of the fish taco. This local chain put fish tacos on the map and they still do it the best.
La Salsa - Some of the best burritos around. Certainly the El Champion is the biggest. The one off I-15 at Valley Parkway is a good place to stop on the way home from mountain biking at Daley Ranch.
Maņana's - A good place in Alpine to stop for Mexican food on your way back from a ride in the east county. The fish tacos are pretty good here. One of the few places other than Rubio's where I like the fish tacos.
The Alpine Taco Shoppe - Another good place in Alpine. Where Zap ate with Gary Fisher.
