THE GOOD OIL
The word AROMATHERAPY means “treatment
using scents”. It refers to the use of essential oils in Holistic Healing to improve
the health and emotional well being in restoring balance to the body. Smell
acts directly to the brain. The aroma enters our nose and connects with cilia,
the fine hair inside the nose lining, converted into electrical impulses that
are transmitted to the brain through olfactory system. All the impulses reach
the limbic system, the part of the brain, which is associated with our moods,
emotions, memory and learning. All the smell that reaches the limbic system has
direct chemical effect on our moods. Limbic system is also a storehouse of
millions of remembered smells. That is why the mere fragrance of haystack takes
us back to childhood.
Essential oils have myriad applications. Aroma
oils work like almost quickly for stress-related problems, psychosomatic
disorders, skin infections, hair loss, inflammations, pains arising from
muscular or skeletal disorder to name a few. Essential oils are safe to use.
The only caution being they should never be used directly because some oils may
irritate sensitive skin or cause photosensitivity. They should be blended in
adequate proportion with the carrier oils. A patch test is necessary to rule
out any reactions.
HOW TO USE AROMA OILS
Essential oil like pure lemongrass oil is
calming, refreshing and relaxing and can be used in a variety of ways at home
and place of work. Some of the common ways are:
Inhalation: Add
1-9 drops of pure lemongrass oil to the hot boiling water and inhale the steam
by covering your head with a towel to stop the steam from escaping. Steaming
also helps open the pores of the skin and thus more oil is absorbed giving
additional benefit of a facial. The bowl with hot water and lemongrass oil
could be left under the bed to envelope the room with aromatic fragrance. A
drop or two of lemongrass oils on a tissue kept inside the pillow or cushion
could be used for a very peaceful and relaxed sleep.
Diffusers for Aromatherapy:
Diffusers are generally made of ceramic or clay. It has a cave like opening to
house a small candle or earthen oil lamps and the top is shaped like a curve to
hold a little water and a few drops of lemongrass oil. Light the candle or the
lamp. Once the water and 2-3 drops of lemongrass oil heat up, evaporation takes
place and the whole atmosphere is filled with the aromatic scent. This is ideal
for presenting conducive ambience during a gathering or even in bedrooms,
hotels, living rooms, etc. and anywhere where scented air is required. In order for aromatherapy to be effective,
only pure, unadulterated and natural essential oil must be used.
Bedtime: Sprinkle 2-3 drops of
lemongrass oil on the pillow cover or on a tissue that can be placed under the
pillow or cushion cover and inhale just before sleeping or while sleeping. This
can be very useful in treating headaches, stress, tension and in boosting
confidence.
Air Freshener: In a piece of
cotton, put two to three drops of lemongrass oil and place it in a room or in
your bathroom.
Compresses: Both cold and
hot compresses are profitable. Add 2-3 drops of lemongrass oil to a bowl of hot
