The story behind this is simple , While on the Tour we had I was loosing oil like I owned a well, 24 quarts in 100 miles is a bit excessive for any car or truck, so here's what I did to try and fix this problem. I first decided I pulled the engine enough time this month so I will pull the rear axle back to get to the ball joint area. Well that went fine , I sealed the center plug hole with a little blue silycon and re glued the gasket in place with some more and I thought while I'm at it I'll put a spacer on the tail shaft and an "O" ring. Ok did all that no more oil leak , Well it didn't work . Without the oil getting into the 4th main the ball cap seized up solid onto the tail shaft, Big problem . Never put a very close tolarence ball cap onto the shaft and not give it some oil to spin in. So here I am on my back under the TT hanging from the rafters with a grinder cutting off the ball cap not fun or easy. Ok Done removed the bad cap. Then I checked out the tranny for dust washed it out and now I'm getting set to put the axle back in, not easy when you have no one to help you So I went and got Peg to turn the crank to align the square with the u-joint. That went in easy this time. Did it myself the first time. Ok I noticed the ball housing is very worn out so I am cutting a peice of inner tube to make a boot to go around the ball area, to seal it a bit more I think this was the main reason for loosing so much oil , but why was it coming through the 4th Main, I think the plug in the center of the tailshaft was loose and in the wrong place. So it shifted when going up hill opening the flood gates more or less. So with the sealant in there it should not do that anymore .I'll post the results here tomorrow. see the pictures. |
