The basic needs for goldfish:

Goldfish require lots of care and concern.

Space: They need at least 10-20 gallons for about 1 goldfish.
Feeding: Goldfish need a different variety of food for them to grow healthy.
Decoration: They need things like fake plants (Maybe real), gravel, things to go through, and hiding spaces. Otherwise your fish will be bored and that will cause them to be shy towards you.
Cleaning: Goldfish require their tank cleaned every 2-3 weeks. Otherwise the algae level will get real high and they will die. I suggest a algae scrub. You should also get a filter to pick up the poop. When fish poop the poop has a chemical called ammonia. High levels of ammonia are poisonous to them. So you should clean out the poop every so often.
Growth: Fish grow rapidly through their life. Never keep a fish in a bowl or tiny tank. They will be cramped and will run out of oxygen. Causing them to die.
Aquarium tips: Goldfish like a neat and colorful tank. Not an empty one. The first step to making your goldfish happy is gravel. Multi-colored gravel is best. Next. Get plenty of decoration. Things like hiding places, things to go through etc. After that you should stick in some underwater plants (fake or real). Real plants will get eating which is sometimes bad for the plant. Still put lots of plants in and the fish won't bother eating them all. Stick the plants bottom under the gravel. Make sure the plant is in about an inch or the plants will float up. Another idea is to add floating plants too. Add some bottom feeders and a few pond snails and TADA!! You got your aquarium your fish will love.

Breeding: Breeding. It's a basic part of a goldfishes life. Goldfish can mature and be ready to mate in 1-3 years. Most mature around 2. Goldfish won't breed if they are cramped, have bad water conditions or the temperature of their water is over 72 degrees. After your fish have matured (aproximetly 2 years), you can tell if they're male or female. Males have things called Tubercules (white spots) on their head and gills. If you don't see any you either have all females or your fish haven't matured. The male also chases the female and nips her under the bum. So the one without Tubercules (unless it is a male who hasn't matured) or is being chased is the female.
