Part 5

Bernie was at the table cleaning his gun, when Franky came
in. "Franky! Hey man what's going on?" Franky set two bags down on
the table and pulled out some heavy artillery.

He gave Bernie a grin at the wide-eyed look on his face. "Just making
sure we're prepared man. Who knows what bossman has in store for us.
We want to be prepared right?" At Bernie's nod he went over and
looked through the hole in the wall. The kids were sitting quietly
talking amongst themselves.

"They give you any trouble?" He asked as he returned to the table.
Bernie shook his head and continued to get his gear ready.

"Nah. They've been quiet for a while now." Soon Franky had all of his
supplies unpacked and began to put them away with his gear.

"Just one more day man. By tomorrow evening we'll be off to wherever
we want." Bernie grinned, stood and stretched. "Yeah man. I'm gonna
turn in early. I want to be alert for tomorrow." With that he headed
off to the side of the warehouse where they slept. Franky continued
to finish with his preparing and after a quick bite decided to turn
in himself. 'No need to mess up because of exhaustion tomorrow. With
one last glance into the room (the kids were now sleeping themselves)
he climbed into bed. Soon he was asleep with Bernie's snores as a
lullaby. He was so gone that he didn't notice the shadow that flitted
across his face cast by a figure moving quickly by.

Kyle McGree wasn't new to his job as a hitman. In fact he had done
plenty of other jobs just like this, and was considered one of the
best.

Taking out those who worked for others wasn't uncommon. As long as he
got paid he didn't care. And if the employer tried anything, well he
could give said employer a hole in the head. He didn't know all the
details, just to take out the two fools that he was watching sleep,
while on the roof, tomorrow at a drop-off. And implicate instructions
to take out 3 kids, whose photos he had studied, if they didn't. A
simple job, one he had no qualms in doing for the price offered. He
moved to the other side of the warehouse, where the children were
kept. The kids were sleeping soundly on the floor as he watched. 'No
problem at all,' he thought settling on his haunches to wait for
morning.

Cline was cursing profusely as the picture remained dark. Lex and
Clark walked in when they had been summoned to see what the problem
was.

"No picture." Clark said softly. Cline sighed and shook his
head. "There's picture, but just picture that we can't see. We'll
have to wait for morning before we'll be able to see the location."
He straightened and looked at Clark and Lex. "We have men on standby
ready to move in Metropolis and here once we get a clear picture.
We'll be there as quickly as possible."

Lex nodded and smiled softly. He glanced at Clark then took a step
towards the detective. "We want to thank you for all you've done
detective. Your dedication to the job is appreciated." Clark had
moved to stand beside his mate and was nodding in agreement. Cline
smiled softly in return, and inclined his head.

"It was actually a pleasure to help. I have seen these kinds of
situations for many years, and you two have done an outstanding job."
The easy quiet that descended in the room was disrupted by Clines
walky-talky going off. "Sir! We think we saw a shadow move by the
truck. I had it enhanced and it looked like a person sir."

"Thanks Phil." He sighed and looked at the couple before him. "Looks
like we have a new player in the mix."

Chloe flew down the hall to a side theater room in the Metropolis
Inquisitor's building. She saw Patrick in a chair at a desk going
over what looked like notes. "Patrick!" He looked up and smiled at
her before motioning her over.

"Chloe. How's it going?"

"It's going good since you called. What do you have for me?"

"Well some very interesting stuff that's for sure. You remember that
theory you had about outside sources and all that?" At her nod he
continued. "Well I looked up some assistants and the assistant's
assistants of LuthorCorp. a.k.a LexCorp. A couple were really shady,
but one kept popping up at me. A man named Dominic used to work for
Lex's father before he passed. He was his personal assistant, and had
taken care of a great deal of Lionel Luthor's affairs. When Lionel
died it seemed he left a few of his matters in the care of Dominic.
These affairs were locked of course so I couldn't get to them, but
one wasn't. It was linked to a business deal that Lex had been
handling that made the news. From what I remember Dominic had tried
to join the two of them in that venture, when Lex declined on
national TV. Now this was all hush hush, but some of my contacts knew
of the matter. They informed me that Dominic had offered Lex a lot
more than just to be business partners. You remember that newscast
they did right? Well he seemed to take the rebuff well, but my
contacts said he went on a major fit afterward. There's your motive:
Rejection. Then he suddenly laid low for a while now. Now as I was
looking into this I noticed that Dominic was suddenly becoming very
active. I recorded a meeting that I want you to see just this
afternoon." With that he popped the cassette tape into the VCR and
sat back to watch with Chloe glued to the screen. Then he began a
complementary on what was happening. "You see these two guys? Judo
Qui, and Hassan Guardino. I did a background check and they have
quite a bit of dirt on them. It seems that Judo Qui runs a very big
black market under the faade of a casino. He deals mostly in
weaponry, and chemical substances. Now Hassan Guardino is rumored to
have a production of heavy artillery, including some serious bombs,
in the Mid West. Now you told me that Lex was asked for the armament
codes of several countries? Well I don't know about you, but that and
meeting with two men that would undoubtedly hand over some serious
cash for those codes makes him rather suspicious to me."

Chloe's mouth slowly closed as all the information processed. Then
she jumped Patrick hugging him fiercely. "You're the best! Thanks so
much Pat! I've got to get this info to Lex and Clark."

He smiled and nodded handing her a copy of the tape and a disk that
neatly compiled all the information he had just showed her, and
watched as she put it in her bag and jumped up to go. "Just remember
that you said we'd share the scoop."

She looked at him and grinned. "Hell Pat you can have it! Just make
it good kay? And don't print until we tell you its safe! See ya
later!"

Lex was curled up behind Clark that early morning dosing when a loud
knock woke them up. Clark was at the door by the time Lex had swung
his legs over the bedside.  Chloe followed by the rest of the gang,
except Lana and Whitney, who had taken Maria home, and including
Cline poured into the room and made themselves comfortable. Lex
raised an eyebrow and Clark came to sit beside him when Chloe held up
her hands. "You guys remember the phone call I received? Well that
was one of my contacts and he had a whole lot of info." She looked
directly at Lex. "I think we can safely say that this guy
is 'bossman'." With that she pulled out a disk from her purse and
went to the computer on Lex's desk. Then she went to the TV and
popped the tape in. "Now listen carefully."

*

"Sage? What's wrong?" Sage looked over at Kel and pointed to the
window. Kel looked up and saw that the light that had been coming
through was blocked. He frowned and wondered what it could be when it
suddenly moved away. He got up untangling himself carefully from
Trish and walked over to look out. Nothing. 'I wonder what that
was...' He looked over at Sage who looked scared. "It's okay Sage.
Whatever it was it's gone now." Sage nodded and waited until he came
and laid back down between them before curling close and falling
asleep again. Kel stared at the window for a long time before falling
asleep again. Just as he closed his eyes he saw a sliver of sunlight
come through.

"Bernie! Bernie! Wake up! It's time to finish this." Hands shaking
him awake accompanied those words. He groaned and rolled to his feet
before being tempted to go back to sleep. The sooner this was over
the better. As he got dressed and put his full gear on Franky fixed
breakfast and took it in to the kids while leaving their's out on the
table. Soon they were sitting down eating. Bernie swallowed a
mouthful of his food before looking up at Franky. "What were the kids
doing?"

"Ah nothing. I had to wake them up but besides that they just sat
there and ate. We'll let them use the toilet and then we'll head off
to the site." Bernie nodded and they ate silently for the rest of the
meal.

Kyle looked out over the area he was in and studied it for the best
point for the hit. He soon found a spot on the roof that allowed him
to see the whole floor area where the deal was going to be made. He
had access to the door to get inside once the lackey's were taken
care of. Then whether they had managed to kill the children or not,
he would go in and retrieve the goods, and shoot them, holding Clark
and Lex off with a couple of rounds before getting to helicopter that
would take him away. And if the cops showed up, well they would find
a rather large surprise.

*

Lex was red and looked about ready to kill someone when Chloe had
finished telling them what she had learned. Clark had finally grabbed
him and covered his mouth as he cursed up a storm until he calmed
down.

"That's not going to help Lex. We've got to do go into this with calm
heads. We'll meet them at the warehouse with the stuff, and Cline and
his men will be at the location of the kids once they figure out
where it is. We'll make it through this okay?" Lex nodded and mumbled
against Clark's hand. Clark moved his hand and asked him to repeat
that. Lex sighed and turned to hug him fiercely and buried his head
into Clark's neck, before pulling back and looking into his eyes.

"I should have known. I'm smarter than this Clark. I should have-."
Clark had been shaking his head once Lex said the first few words and
then caught Lex's lips softly shushing him with his own, before
resting his forehead against Lex's.

"Don't do that guilt thing. You couldn't have. But we know now, and
all that matters is that we take care of the now, okay?" Lex looked
deeply into his eyes, looking for the blame that he thought Clark
should have towards him. But all he saw was worry, determination, and
deep love. Lex sighed again and nodded giving Clark one last squeeze
before stepping back. The soft talking stopped when Lex turned to the
other occupants in the room.

"What are you going to do Lex?" Martha asked when the silence became
strained.

They all looked even more worried at his frigid (and even though
Martha didn't want to admit it) evil smile. "I'll handle Dominic. But
right now," he glanced at the clock beside the bed, "I think Clark
and I should be getting ready to go do this."

Just as everyone got ready to leave the room, Cline's walky-talky
beeped. "Cline here."

"Sir, we just got visual. It's confirmed to be at an abandoned
warehouse in Metropolis. Units are awaiting your command to go in."

He glanced at Lex and Clark. Lex looked at the time and said, "They
should be gone by now."

Cline spoke into the walky-talky. "Do it. And keep me posted. Over
and out." He looked at them again. "Looks like it's time to give this
end a beginning folks."
