Part 3/?
Lex slowly sank down onto the couch and Clark was there gently taking
the phone from him and placing it back in its cradle. Lex's hands
shook slightly before he got himself under control and stared into
his mates eyes. "Clark." Came out as a croak and he cleared his
throat before trying again. "Clark Angel was scared. She didn't get a
chance to tell me where they were though. We need to find them soon
Clark." Clark was stroking his arms softly nodding in agreement.
"Sorry to interrupt, but what did he want?" Came from Chloe, and
everyone's attention was on Lex.
Lex glanced at Cline. "I know the entire conversation was taped but
I'll run down his demands. First," Lex said as he ticked off a finger
with each one, "he wants a great deal of money, which isn't an issue.
Second he wants Clark and I to go to some abandoned site to meet some
contact there tomorrow with the money. Lastly he wants the armament
codes for several countries." There was a collective gasp at that and
he nodded. "I know. It's the children against the possible deaths of
millions in other countries."
It was silent until Lana spoke up. "But Lex you can't possibly give
him what he wants. You don't have the ability or authority." She said
looking confused.
"Actually Lana, Lex could get those codes. Being the head of the
Presidents advisory board gets you a lot of clout these days.
Especially since that President was going to lose, and Lex bowed out
to become a family man." Chloe said. "He'd just have to pull a whole
lot of favors and strings."
"Which I'm having a feeling that this kidnapper knows a whole lot
more about me than a lot of people do. He knows too much." Lex said
under his breath. Clark shot him a look, and Lex gave him the 'I'll
talk to you later' look. He nodded and stood and motioned to
everyone.
"I suggest we get cracking people. This can't get out of hand any
more that it has. We have to find these people and now." Everyone
looked at him surprised. It was like he was spouting Lex at them. But
it put them in gear and they all did what they could to figure these
mystery kidnappers out. Chloe left around 7:00 with a "I've got to
get to some contacts," and zipping out. Pete, who had taken up
engineering, looked over the overall operation of the security grid,
and found nothing amiss. It was really just a regular
inspection/repair job. Jonathan and Whitney went over the staff with
a fine-tooth comb and found zilch. The staff did there shifts came
and went with a regular conformity. That's what the sheets said
anyway. Lex was phoning in favors and business associates in an
effort to find some sort of clue. Anything...Clark was also calling
associates that he'd had contact through with Lex. They seemed to be
hitting dead ends there, so they moved on to other leads. Lana was
looking at the cleaning staff and comparing notes with the plant
staff. They all seemed to check out except one...Bernard Clower
seemed to have a lot slips. He seemed disrespectful and vindictive.
It seemed he had been fired just yesterday though so she didn't give
it another though.
Martha was also getting through the lists of landscapers quickly,
making phone calls here and there. It seemed that all the head
landscapers were on vacation, just assistants doing sweeps of the
grounds every other week. Nothing substantial, but something was
nudging her. 'Why would all the usual workers be on vacation at the
same time?' She checked the schedule and saw that one head was to
have remained. But a Franklin Krass had volunteered to look after the
yards from last week to the end of this week. 'He volunteered?' The
note attached to the sheet said that Krass was doing the head a
favor, since a family member had taken to a unexpected
illness... 'There's something wrong here.' She thought and looked up
to see Lex and Clark splitting up the rest of Lana's assignment, as
she tended to baby Maria.
"Lex. Come here for a minute." He got up and left Clark to that job
and joined Martha. "Lex have you met a Franklin Krass?" Lex looked
thoughtful for a minute then his face cleared up. "Yes I did. He took
over for one of my head landscapers when a family member was sick.
Why? Did you find something?"
"Well look here." She pointed to the dates on the sheet she had been
studying. "Doesn't it seem a little strange that these dates are
perfect to prepare for the kidnapping and execute it? He had time to
maneuver events to his advantage, and he to study the children's
activities without having attention drawn to him. Millian said that
men were already in masked and in the bushes. It sounds as if they
were lying in wait to me."
Lex had turned red by the time she had finished and nodded. "Your
right. They could have grabbed the children at any time, but they had
waited until the children were on their way inside. Roughly at the
time the guards were rotating. And it all happened right beneath my
nose." Martha could hear the self-loathing in Lex's voice and wrapped
a reassuring arm around his shoulders.
"You couldn't have known Lex. I wouldn't have thought anything
strange except for the timing. It really was just to perfect. But the
important thing is that they made a mistake. Now we can make our
move." Lex looked at her a smiled a truly chilling smile. "Your right
Martha." With that he was up making more phone calls. Talking quietly
into it for some time. Martha took the time to check out the room and
the atmosphere in it.
Clark had felt Lex's anxiety and tension across the room, and he kept
shooting glances their way. Martha smiled at the obvious affection
and love her son had for Lex and was warmed by it. Clark had never
been normal, and she'd been afraid that the depression would kill him
at one point. But then Lex had shown him what Jon and herself
couldn't. He had given him a chance to be normal. It had certainly
been interesting and heart stopping at times but they made it
through. Through the rough and the smooth they stuck together.
Jonathan and Whitney were now taking over security since Lex had been
called to Lana then Martha. Pete was talking on his phone to Chloe
talking animatedly. Lana was in a corner rocking the baby to sleep.
Detective Cline was in another corner talking to his own contacts.
She smiled softly, and was glad that they had gotten a compassionate
and thorough detective. None of them wanted to hear the "I'm sorry,
but there's no hope" spiel, and he certainly hasn't given it. Just as
she was thinking this Lex walked over to Cline and started talking to
him in quiet tones. For now it was quiet and they had something to
move on. She hoped they were in time for whatever came next.

"Xenon." Sage said.
"Xena." Kel countered.
"X-ray" Trish said with a sweet smile. The boys rolled their eyes and
continued the game. Soon a jaw-cracking yawn left Trish's mouth and
she covered it with her hand smothering a giggle.
"Tired, Angel?" At her nod Kel motioned her to his lap and she rested
her head on his leg, and was covered by one of the thin scratchy
blankets provided for them. Not what they were used to and Sage had
complained, which made the 'cap' man as they had started calling him
go on a rant about how stuck up and spoiled they were, and that a
good wake up call was in order. Kel had made Sage promise not to
complain anymore so they wouldn't have to listen to capman talk. Sage
slid closer to them and laid back near Kel.
"I so wished we had powers like daddy right now." Kel shushed him
with a clapped hand to his mouth and gave the glare of death as his
family labeled it.
"Do not talk about that here! If they find out who dad is they might
never let us go," he hissed to him. Sage nodded under his hand and
mumbled something against his hand making him snatch it back at the
tickling sensation. "What did you say?"
"I said that I wouldn't...but it still would be really good right
now." Kel nodded in agreement and laid back against the wall.
"I know. But don't worry. Between mom and dad we'll be out of here
soon. Relax, 'kay? No giving capman advantages right?" At Sage's nod
they fell into a comfortable silence and tried to get comfortable on
the hard, but commercially carpeted floor. Trish was knocked out for
the count, snoring softly in her sleep.
"I wish I could sleep like she does." Sage whispered softly. Kel
chuckled and agreed. Soon nothing could be heard except Sage's
evening out breath and snuggle against Kel's side. Finally with a few
moments to himself Kel thought about this past week. It had been so
normal for his family. His parents heading off to work and him, Trish
and Sage heading off to school. He hadn't really paid that morning
much attention, so secure in his knowledge of seeing his mother and
father that very same day later on. He remembered the warm embrace of
his mother, the smell of some cologne that Kel had never thought
about before fresh in his mind. The strength of his father giving him
a huge bear hug lifting him off his feet. The quiet made his memories
sharp and every sensation and the joy in his heart at the sight of
the people he loved so much stayed with him as he gently cried
himself to sleep.

The plan was going perfectly. Bernard had called and told him that
the call went well. Lex would give him everything at that meeting
place they had set up. Soon he would see Lex Luthor again while his
lackey's made the deal. Not only would he have a great deal of money
after taking care of Dumb and Dumber, but the armament codes would be
his as well. He would be the greatest pleasure. First he'd have the
lackey's take them out, then when Lex was in despair, he'd have Clark
and every other person that he every cared about killed. Lex wouldn't
know it was him of course. He'd walk in with the codes and become
everyone's hero. Then with Lex in shambles he'd make his move.
'Lex you will be mine. Even if I have to destroy everyone and
everything to make it happen.' A soft cackle filled the room becoming
louder and louder as the man looking out over the skyline of
Metropolis folded in half with maniacal mirth.
Everyone within hearing distance of that laugh cringed, shivered, and
hurried away as fast as they could.
