Part 2/?
Lex and Clark found Millian on the hospital bed reading a book, when
they walked into her room. The sun was shining brightly in the room,
as she squinted up at them, the bright bandage on her head reminding
Lex to try and be gentle with her. The doctors said she had been
hysterical for hours, before they knocked her out with a
tranquilizer.
"Mr. Luthor! Mr. Kent! I'm so sorry! I tried to stop the bad men but
they wouldn't listen to me, and then they took the babies away! I
tried and they hit me, and I couldn't move, but I could hear the
babies crying! I'm so sorry!" Her voice had gotten louder and more
hysterical by the second, and Clark ended up by her bedside, patting
her shoulder softly.
"It's okay Millian. I know you tried your best. But I just want you
to recap exactly what happened yesterday. Can you do that for me?"
She nodded and Lex grabbed a chair and sank down slowly. It had been
a long night, with fearful looks, and jumps at the phone ringing.
They were all friends, none of the calls the kidnappers. It was 4:00
in the morning before he crashed on the couch with Clark curled
around him to sleep for a couple of hours. Martha and Jon had gone to
bed earlier, and were up fixing breakfast when Clark and he got
downstairs, after a long shower. No sex though. Neither could handle
that now with their children God-knows-where. It had been a silent
morning with everyone in their own thoughts when friends started to
arrive for 'emotional support' as Chloe had put it. First it had been
Chloe, and Pete. Then Lana, and Whitney. Lana and Whit had brought
their baby girl with them, and she put smiles on everyone's faces for
a little while. Before Lex started thinking about his beautiful,
brilliant babies out there in that evil world. A world he knew all
about and regretted them being in. That's why he had tried to shield
them, but it was all for nothing. Because now they weren't here with
him...Clark had given him one look before pulling him into the hall
and saying I know, I know, over and over while wrapping himself
around Lex. Finally Martha had come out and suggested they come to
see Millian and try to get an account firsthand from her. They had
jumped at the chance to do something and found themselves at the
hospital in record time.
"I....The kids and I were inside and they had gotten bored since
school was out for the rest of the day. It was a half-day as you
know." They both nodded. "So we sent outside as usual and played in
the pool, and then the boys played frisbee while I did with Trish's
hair. You know how she loves having her hair played with. Then the
boys came over and said they were hungry. I had gotten up and we
started walking to the house when the bushes that lined the fields
started shaking and then the men were there. I told the children to
run and tried to stop the men, when one of them tripped me and
started beating me." She took a trembly breath at this and Clark
patted her shoulder again encouraging her to continue. "Then he left
when I was losing consciousness and I could here the babies
screaming...The poor babies were calling for me but I couldn't
move..." She had broken down and sobbed saying the babies the babies.
Lex got up and went out into the hallway, leaving Clark to comfort
the distraught woman.
He found a window and stared out and started thinking. Something he
hadn't totally been able to do since this nightmare started. 'Why
wasn't security keeping an eye on things?' He knew that they had said
the security system had been off-line for a short inspection/repair
session. 'But that should have been a reason to tighten security.'
Johnson, his new head of security, had said that the last security
head had them on rotation. Of course it happened during the
kidnapping. 'I pay good money for these worthless idiots to keep my
family safe! For nothing!' He simmered ready to hit something when he
felt a heavy hand on his shoulder. He whirled tensed, when he saw
Clark with a sad look on his face.
"She's asleep." Lex nodded and turned back to the window and leaned
back into Clark as he wrapped his arms around Lex's waist resting his
head on his shoulder. They stood quietly for long moments Lex's mind
awhirl with thoughts. 'The security system was off-line...The guards
were on rotation...Why does this sound like someone knows the system
at the castle. They planned everything perfectly! There's a leak in
my home!? What do I pay for! Half brained guards, and workers
unworthy of their positions or trust?' Clark had tightened his arms
around him and shook him gently. "Lex? What are you thinking?" Lex
sighed and tried to relax. He knew Clark could feel his tension, and
anger and that it would upset him, but DAMN!
"It's just that I think we have a leak in the castle. And it could be
anyone, since the guards aren't all that loyal. There's a whole issue
of distrust with these guards, since they used to work for dad. I
also think that someone on the inside had to help. There's no way
those guys could have gotten in, even with the security grid down."
He smirked and glanced back at his mate. "They can't jump, or contort
the gate bars like you." He felt Clark smile against the back of his
neck and held onto the arms encircling him. Then Clark lifted his
head from his neck.
"Lex even if it is someone on the inside, it'll be pretty impossible
to track. There are so many people that are employed to you and the
company." Lex could here the frown in his mates' voice and nodded. He
turned and stared into his eyes.
"I know Clark. But everyone that's hired had a background check, and
screening done. There'll be someone that doesn't add up. Someone
close enough to the castle to have access, and a reason to kidnap the
kids. And have enough security to get in and out without a fuss."
Clark gave him a raised eyebrow.
"That's a whole lot of people Lex." He started ticking off points
with little nods of his head never taking him arms from around
Lex. "Reason to kidnap kids: money, power trip, or to get to us for
revenge. Close enough: staff, maintenance, security, landscaping,
business associates, reporters for interviews, cleaning services,
every other month. Lex it's a lot to narrow down."
"Yeah it is. So lets get started." With that they left the hospital
with purpose. Something to help manage the fear and dread growing
with every minute, every second. The ability to do something.
When they got back to the castle everyone was still in the den. They
all stopped talking and looked up at Lex and Clark. Martha got up and
walked to the boys. "Clark, Lex. Did you boys find anything out?"
Clark nodded and went to sit by the window, as Lex began explaining
his theory. Once he had finished everyone was psyched to help. Chloe
and Clark were going to go through the reporters (there was a lot of
them) with Clark doing some business associates as well; Pete,
Jonathan, and Whitney over staff, and maintenance; Lana and Martha,
cleaning services; and landscaping; Lex, the rest of the business
associates and security. Clark smiled and was suddenly very happy
that they had friends to help them out. It was an awful lot to do,
but with all of their help maybe it wouldn't be so impossible.
Soon Lex had gotten certificates for everyone signed and dated to
investigate whatever they thought necessary. He had Johnson watch the
proceedings and had him sign them as well (over the man's protests).
Lex also got his personal assistant to get the files that everyone
needed for their searches, and as much info as possible. The group
was coordinated and focused when Cline walked in. He raised an
eyebrow at the flurry of activity around the room. Cellular phones
open and demands being made. Files opened and studied, and Lex
arguing with his chief of security. He stepped close and heard the
end of the conversation.
"I don't care! I want files on them pulled and all of them
investigated again and I want it done now!" With that the new head
of security turned and hurried out the room. Lex turned and saw him.
Cline gestured to the activity and raised an eyebrow. "We're
investigating workers and such that had access to the castle. This
whole thing smells of a leak and a betrayal, and I want it out in the
open."
Cline nodded and smiled. 'I should of know they wouldn't be caught
dead twiddling their collective thumbs.' He thought with amusement.
He had met the friends while Clark and Lex had been at the hospital.
Loyal and trustworthy was the impression he'd gotten from them. 'It's
good for them to be doing something. And something that is useful as
well.' Suddenly the room became utterly silent except for the baby
cooing in Martha's arms. The telephone had cut through the clatter
instantly. They all stared at each other until Cline motioned for Lex
to take it, while talking softly on his earpiece. "Get ready to
record the phone." He whispered into it. Lex took a deep breath and
picked up the phone.
"Hello?"
"Lex Luthor?" Came a distorted voice.
"This is he."
"Good...We have a great deal to talk about Luthor. Don't try and
trace this cause it won't work. So listen up. Oh and here is an
incentive for good behavior." There was a pause before, "Mommy?" The
tiny voice asked.
"Yes! Angel its Mommy are you okay are the boys there with you, have
they hurt you?"
"Mommy I'm...I'm scared. Please come get us."
"I will baby! I will. Do you know where you are?"
"Uh, uh Luthor." Came the distorted voice again. "No more until we
deal. They're all here and can't wait to get home. So like I said,
listen well."
*
Bernard was quite pleased with himself. He had told Luthor everything
he needed to, and he hadn't even said a word 'til he was done.
Something about him hearing his kids. He hadn't let Luthor talk to
them though. His employer had told his partner in crime to just let
him hear the kids voice once and then tell him their demands. It had
been fun shaking the great Luthor up. Even though he had sounded
calm, he knew the man was thinking about his 'babies'. A snort
escaped him as he looked in on the monsters through the hole in the
wall. The older boy was in the middle the other two curled around him
sleeping.
He had scared them earlier with threats and such, as his partner in
crime told him to, and the little girl had caved the most. If he
really didn't want the money and didn't hate Lex Luthor like he did
(as well as all offspring of his, adopted or otherwise), he would
have wept at her haggard and terrified appearance. It had come
through on the phone very well. Her had heard Luthor on the other
phone sounding all frantic. Heh. The rich pompous freak is finally
getting what he deserves.
Bernard was tired of working in the dump that was Luthor Corp. Was
tired of cleaning the floors of the long hallways, of cleaning the
bathrooms. When he was been approached by his best bud, he was all to
happy to accept a job that would bring big bucks. He had asked how
they was gonna get in and his buddy, Franky, had said that some dude
that was rich was going to hook them up with a good deal. Get the
security down, what time to move, so that they wouldn't draw
attention, and what time the brats came out to play. It had gone down
perfectly. The kids had been put in bags, and dragged off the lawn
into the waiting truck, and they had made off clean with the snotty
kids.
The oldest boy looked at like he'd like to beat him up. But strangely
only when he feels himself or the kids being threatened. When Bernie
brought the food in the boy had stood in front of the kids, and
watched him like a hawk, but otherwise didn't move. He hated that
other kid too. The middle brat, (was it Sage?) was just like daddy
Luthor. Impatient, and high and mighty on himself and his parents
telling him exactly how he thought Bernie and company was going to
pay for kidnapping them. He thinks he hated the little girl the most.
She had given him pitying looks as if to say poor, poor man. But the
only ones that would be sorry here was them. He let out a delighted
laugh, and went to get some food. After watching the little brat's
scarf down the food he brought, he was feeling a bit hungry
himself...
*
He smirked at the silent rage on Lex's face as he watched the news
that night with a glass of wine. Lex Luthor's pain was on glorious
display, as well as his cursed mate's. He knew he had hired bumpkins
for the operation, but it was best if they did the dirty work, and
took the fall. Of course they had state of the art equipment and
instructions to the letter as well as a very secure line to him, and
him to them, for emergencies. Perhaps they could give Luthor a chase
for a while. Worth it to see the man in pain like the pain he had so
long ago. Lex would pay for completely humiliating him in front of
the world, for breaking his heart. All for that insignificant clumsy
reporter. Clark Kent. His pain would be especially sweet... After all
you don't take what was rightfully his and expect to live happily
ever after.
"...existence." He tuned in in time to see Lex walk away from the
cameras. He flicked the TV off when Lex's PR man came on. 'Yes dear
Lex. Soon you'll be mine. Soon it'll be time for me to shattered your
world. Just like you destroyed mine. And I'll be the only one there
to pick up the pieces.' With that thought he sank back into his plush
chair, and into the shadows.
