Part 9

Clark said goodbye to Chloe, Pete, Lana, and Whitney who had shown up
to take his fiance out to eat. 'It's good to see all the gang
again.'

"So how's it feel to see old friends Clark?" He turned and smiled at
his parents on the steps. "It feels great! I forgot how much I miss
Chloe's ranting and hanging out with Pete. Lana and Whit look happy
and I'm really glad that they worked it out. I'm also happy that Pete
and Chloe hooked up. I kinda thought they should be together. Now all
I have to do is muster up the courage to tell them about me and Lex."
His parent's gave him an understanding look and they all walked
inside together.

"Just tell them the truth Clark. They'll understand, or if not they
will get used to it because they care about you and Lex." His mother
said as they cleaned up the living room. He smiled and nodded and
they turned in to get an early start in the morning.

Cresi appeared in Clark's bedroom at 4:20, as he slept. She focused
on their bond and 'suggested' several feelings and reactions within
Clark's subconscious about Lex. She waited and as he awoke she smiled
at him. "Good morning Clark." Her expression turned grave and she
took on a sorrowful look. "I'm afraid I have some disturbing things
to tell you about Lex. You might want to remain seated for it."

Jonathan woke up when he thought he heard a sound. He listened
carefully then laid his head back down when no more came. Martha
snuggled to his side and he rolled over taking her in his arms and
drifted back off to sleep. 'A couple more minutes.' His sleep fogged
mind thought before thinking nothing at all.

*

Lex sat up in his bed fingering the blanket. After Cresi had left he
had went to get a drink, but after throwing it all up, he cautiously
settled for apple juice. He had stopped shaking around the third
glass before falling back on his bed to sleep leaving it unfinished.
He had gotten about 5 hours in before he woke up. The clock read
5:30. 'It's way too early for me to be waking up.' But he knew he
wasn't going to be going back to sleep anytime soon.

The confrontation with Cresi had left him shaking and though he
didn't want to admit it, worried. He knew Clark said that he loved
him. He had felt his love in more ways than one. Even before when
they were best friends, not lovers, Clark trusted in him and always
took his side.

'But does he really? Or is he just after a lay since he wasn't
getting any in college?' He hated the voice in his head that sounded
like his father. It was always the pessimistic voice and right now he
didn't want to hear any of it.

But he couldn't help not thinking about what Cresi had said. What
exactly was she capable of? Did she have some kind of super weapon
that Earth was ill prepared for? More and more Cresi had all the
warning bells in his head going off. She was just to unpredictable
for him to truly understand the way she thought. 'She is after all a
being of alien origin.'

One thing in particular that kept bugging him though was her last
outburst. What did she mean connected to the future of her people,
and to collect what's her's? What did he have that she considered her
property? He sighed and put the questions aside. His father always
told him not to dwell on things that he couldn't answer, but to bide
his time and when the information was his, to use it to his advantage
as soon as possible.

'I'll just grab a shower and start some work early. Then I'll go see
Clark later and maybe we can go for a drive or have a picnic.' He
daydreamed briefly about Clark and sunlight before snapping himself
out of it. 'When did I get so sappy?' He thought with a shudder. 'I
guess right around the time I fell in love with a farmer's son.'

*

Clark was up in his loft when he heard Lex's car pull up. His face
contorted in anger and but disappeared as quickly as it had come
without him even really noticing. He turned back to his workbench and
continued to carve out the heart-shaped necklace, with a silver chain
that he had wanted to give to Lex made of amethyst. When he heard Lex
ascend the steps he didn't turn around, but he tuned all his senses
on where Lex was. When he felt Lex's arms wrap around him hesitantly
he held very still.

"Clark? What's wrong love?" Lex's voice was whisper quiet and it hurt
a part of Clark that was locked deep inside as something that wasn't
him reared its head.

"Love?" He broke free of Lex's grip and whirled on him. Lex looked
startled and he held his hand out to Clark as if to forestall
whatever else he was about to say. Clark found it hard to keep his
eyes off of Lex's body as he was dressed in tight dark blue denim
shorts, which bared his creamy muscled legs ending in timberland
boots and white socks, and a white Nike t-shirt, with reflective
sunglasses resting on his head. He looked delectable and that made
Clark angrier. "After what you did you can call me love?"

"Clark wait. Please just tell me what it is that you think I did.
Let's sit down and talk okay?" Clark knew Lex was trying to get him
to calm down like he would a wild animal and he felt resentment flare
up within him. Lex always had to be the better than everyone else,
always the cool and collected one. Before Lex could move he had him
up and all the way back on the workbench.

Lex's eyes were wide and he stared at Clark as calmly as he could.
The hands that had lifted him hadn't been gentle in the least and
they were on either side of him keeping him in place. Clark was
making a noise deep within his chest and it wasn't comforting in the
least. And the hard wood beneath his thighs was pinching his skin.

"You had Nixon investigate me." Lex frowned and opened his mouth and
closed it quickly at the warning look in Clark's eyes. "Don't try and
deny it. Cresi gave me the papers that he had accumulated on me. So
how could you call me love?" The steel in Clark's voice made him
loose his breath.

"Clark." His voice broke and he took a deep calming breath before
continuing. "Clark. I'm not going to deny it, but that was long ago.
It was before we became good friends and you asked me to let it go. I
fired Nixon and put the files in my safe to be locked away. Now that
I knew the truth I had intended to destroy them, but I didn't get a
chance. Clark even then I wasn't going to use anything that I found
out against you. I just wanted to know what you were about. And I can
call you love, because I love you." His voice cracked against his
will again and he looked hopefully into Clark's blazing blue
eyes...eyes that were as cold as ice.

"You betrayed my trust Lex. I can't forgive you for that." He held up
the necklace that he was going to give to him and showed Lex the neat
script on the back that was his name. Staring into Lex's eyes he
crumbled the jewelry in his fist. "I don't want to see your lying
face here again. Oh and so you know you will never be loved. You
infect everything you touch with pain and darkness. The only thing
you'll ever be good for is a lay."

The feelings that seemed to take over Clark allowed him to watch in
fascination as a single silver tear trailed down Lex's smooth cheek.
He watched the love and hope die in the blue-gray eyes that shined
brightly with unshed tears. He watched Lex's heart break in two and
did nothing but stand back to let him leave.

Lex wiped the tear away and jumped off the workbench, hitting the
floor and ran as if the end of the world was licking at his heels.

Clark heard the engine start a minute later and the crunch of tires
on gravel as it sped away with his parent's voices yelling after Lex
to wait. Then the pound of footsteps on the floorboards of his loft
as he opened his hand and watched the crushed matter fall to the
floor before sweeping it away with his booted foot. He faced his
parent's calmly as they fired questions at him about Lex.

"It's nothing. We aren't seeing each other anymore is all. Don't
concern yourselves about it. So what's for dinner?" They watched him
walk out as if he was out of his mind before looking at each other
with confusion on their faces.

"I could of sworn those two were soulmate material." Jon said as he
looked again after his apathetic son. Martha nodded in agreement and
looked down as her foot nudged something. A basket with a floral
cloth covering it was on the floor.

"Jon look." She picked it up and opened it to see food, and drink in
the basket. Jon reached in and pulled out something that caught his
eye. He held up a ring to her and read the inscription out loud.

"To a love that will forever grow deeper. LL."

They looked at each other again. "I think Lex did too."

"Mom! Dinner! I'm starving." They hurried downstairs and to the
house.

Martha had seen Lex's face before he roared off. The deep pain and
heartache in those eyes had hit her heart headlong and she had
screamed after him to wait to no avail. Now she was going to get some
answers to Clark's strange behavior to protect another son that she
hadn't known she had adopted in her heart. Looking at Jon she could
see him thinking along the same track. They entered the house as a
unified front.

*
Cresi watched Lex drive off at breakneck speed. It had been simple to
find Lex's well hidden files on the research he had terminated on
Clark. That and her slight influence had caused Clark to become
incensed. He had punched the headboard of his bed, which had made a
hole, new ventilation for his head.

'Now that he's out of the way, I need to collect the unborn child
within him. Perhaps Clark can find another human to mate with soon.
The more children of Kryptonia the better off this planet will be.
But for now I'll take care of the earthling that dare threaten Kal-
El.'

She shimmered to Nixon's residence and found his plans for meeting
Lex written on a piece of paper. She would wait for tomorrow when
they met, and make a diversion. Then she should be able to take out
Nixon, and collect Lex, for the removal of the unborn child. No one
would know what was truly amiss.

"I do this for you Kal-El. And more importantly for your memory
Kryptonia."

The pod in the cellar glowed red briefly before changing to a blue-
purple color as her defense mechanism went to standby, before
shutting off completely.

As her systems focused on other things, her link to Clark lessened as
well as the suggestions she had planted in his mind.
