Physical, chemical and biological quality of natural surface water and groundwater; Organic and inorganic pollutants in water and wastewater; water quality criteria for drinking, municipal, industrial, agricultural, recreational, wildlife and aquatic organisms; specific refractory substances in water and its impact on water usuage; effluent discharge standards;

Environmental Legislation:

Environmental programme and policies of government of India, role of judicial interventions.

Laboratory:

Testing of physical, chemical and biological parameters in water and wastewater

CE570: Air Pollution and Industrial Waste Management

Content -

Air Pollution:

Air pollutants their sources and harmful effects on the environment; meteorological aspect to air pollution; dispersion of air pollutants; air quality, emission, standards, removal of gaseous and particulate pollutants and its impact on water bodies;

Industrial waste management:

Sources and type of wastes - solid, liquid, and gaseous wastes; water use in industry; industrial water quality requirements; control and removal of specific pollutants in industrial wastewaters from dairy, fertilizer, distillery, tannery, food processing, pulp and paper, iron and steel, metal plating and petrochemicals, etc.; treatment flow sheets of industrial wastewater; effect of treated effluent on the receieving water bodies.

1.  Tushar Guha - Wind tunnel simulations of pollutant dispersion within the urban canopy

Expected outcome:   pollutant dispersion coefficient and a validation of a line source model to predict pollutants

On DAAD German exchange research program to Karlshruhe Univ.

2.  Namita R. - Prediction of PM10 and PM2.5 at traffic intersections in urban environments

Expected outcome:   A line source model to predict PM2.5 at traffic intersections for Indian Traffic conditions; performance evaluation of models to predict PM2.5 and PM10; possibility of testing models sensitivity with local meteorology

3.  Gokul - Monitoring of PM10 and estimation of PM2.5 with time series statistical modeling at traffic intersections in urban environments

Expected outcome:   PM2.5 diurnal concentrations at traffic intersections; its contribution in PM10; statistical behaviour of PM2.5 under the influence of tropical meteorology

Expected outcome:   ANN model for PM10 for Indian roadways

2.   Negi - Developing emission factors for Indian vehicles using emission models
