In 1972 Mayor Goodell and a bunch of his cronies thought it would be fun to have a BBQ in his back yard. They invited their friends and neighbors and it turned out a success. they BBQ'ed a pig and it was a pot luck style gathering. it was brought up they should do this again next year and possibly have the gathering at the recreation complex. Maybe they could dig a pit, BBQ a pig and maybe some beef, have another pot luck dinner, and maybe charge a little for the meal and turn the proceeds over to the tow to help support the swimming pool or the complex. Why not have a little parade before the BBQ to draw a few more hungry people. Heck, if were going to have a crowd, we should sell some beer. what about the kids? Lets get some games going for them, a dunking booth, kids parade, horseshoe tournament, egg toss. the ideas are endless.
What should we call this event? it was Marci Cheek, I believe, who came up with the name "Dutton Fun Day." It turned out to be a good time for classes to schedule their class reunions and even a school reunion in 1989, which turned out to be a very successful turnout.
Throughout the years, thousands of dollars have been raised for the care, upkeep, and additions to the recreation complex for everybody's use.
