A brief history of Encaustics As long ago as 500BC natural beeswax has been mixed with pigments and used as a painting medium. Encaustic techniques requiring a heat source to render the wax paint liquid were being used to create artworks. Brushes were not the only means of manipulating the waxes. The Romans used a tool referred to as a 'cestrum' which was like a heavey bronze palette knife. Other examples are portraits found in Egyptian tombs of the Fayum. These portraits display the durability in encaustic paintings. |
