Using power point, show students what Old English looks like and discuss three concepts of poetic line: caesura, alliteration, kenning.

Talk about how it is related to modern English (going through Middle English, giving dates).

In groups of two or three, read Caedmon’s hymn.  In these groups, they’ll do a Say-something reading strategy, stopping one time for each student and writing down ideas discussed (hand in)

Begin Riddle Lesson:  review elements of Anglo-Saxon poetry and  using either images projected from computer or individual computers, visit websites to learn about Old English riddles.

Students work in pairs or alone and choose a riddle from website(or tier by choosing for them).  If they don’t have enough computers, use handouts.  Let them begin to try to solve the riddles.

Circulate to see how they’re doing

Have students get back into Wednesday’s groups, if they haven’t solved riddles yet.

Work on “Riddles” handout: analyze riddles given, write a riddle in the Anglo-Saxon style.  Hand in

Together, talk to class about any remaining questions they might have, or reactions.  Use discussion as assessment

Begin class with crossword puzzle.

Go over answers after collecting puzzle for assessment.

Students spend rest of class writing journal entry about what they have learned about Anglo-Saxons and their thoughts on the kinship of our two languages.
