LEVELS OF PLAY

There are 20 levels that range across the globe including Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Osaka and New York.

The levels are interesting because they're all based on unlockables and percentages. Gamers don't have to achieve all the objectives to beat a level, but if they succeed in achieving them all other monsters might help them during the level, and if 100% completion for the level is reached, that monster will be unlocked as a playable character in melee mode.

In one level Mecha King Ghidorah creates Vorillium Spheres (glowing, metallic balls of energy) and Godzilla has to grab and throw them into the ocean before squaring off with MKG himself. This was only the first part of what apparently is a quite expansive level. Next the player traverses the hilly Osaka, avoiding the attack of spinning silver UFOs that would make Tim Burton proud, before stopping Flying Destroyer's assault on another part of the city.

In another level Godzilla has to knock out a monster generator from spawning infinite monsters aimed at destroying both him and the city.

There are also two levels that show off the game's other style of play: Rail shooting. In one, M.O.G.U.E.R.A. flies through space, with Earth looming large in the background, dodging asteroids and using his electric beam on attacking robotic worms. This level culminated in a one-on-one battle against SpaceGodzilla.

The other rail-shooting level consists of Godzilla's underwater approach to Tokyo, where he swims through the ocean, shooting mines, submarines, and the attacking Ebirah. There were several routes you could take through this board, which emphasizes some of the non-linear elements in the game.

There is also another mission where you find a giant sculpture of a familiar character in a theme park. If you activate a series of power nodes around the character, he'll come to life and help you in your current mission and again later when you confront that area's boss. He'll also be unlocked for multiplayer use.

Environments have been enhanced and enlarged, featuring hills, oceans, harbors and mountains. All structures in the game have advanced destruction mechanics, enabling them to be partially damaged or completely destroyed through multiple impacts. Striking larger buildings will produce dynamically generated gouges that expose the internal skeletal structure before they eventually crumble to the ground.

In fact, the environments are three times the size as the previous game, with players able to rip skyscrapers from the ground, smash others, and simply stomp on others.

At least one level features teensy little civilians running in terror across the bottom of the screen while you fight.
