| Our story begins when film producer Tomoyuki Tanaka was forced to scrap the Japanese-Indonesian film titled Eiko no Kanatani (Behind the Glory) during co-production because the Indonesian government refused to grant work visas to the Japanese actors. Now, all he had was a cast, crew, and equipment as well as a schedule. But, he didn't have a movie. In fact, he didn't have even an idea for a film. One day during Tanaka's trip home, he peered outside the window of the traveling airplane staring at the dark waters below wondering what secrets these waves hide. Then it hit him, why not make a film about a gigantic monster? The producer hired Shigeru Kayama to write the screenplay for the film, and Eiji Tsuburaya for the special effects in the movie. Tanaka began brainstorming for the film's title which the production crew around the studio nicknamed "G' for 'Giant' project. The concept title was added titled Kaitei Niman Mairu Kara Dai Kaiju (The Big Monster from 20,000 Miles Underneath the Sea) but the title was dropped because it was too long, was bit of a tongue-twister, and resembled closely to the films The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). Then, one day a friend informed Tanaka about an overweight press agent working in Toho's publicity department. The agent was named 'Gojira' by some of the staff members - Gojira is the combination of the words gorira (gorilla) and kujira (whale). Tanaka loved the name so much, and after considering it for several days, he officially decided to use it for his monster. Thus, Gojira (Godzilla) was born to the entire world. =============================================================================== |
