	Sweetheart to donate kidney Fianc� is a match for transplant scheduled soon By Greg Ubbelohde Staff writer for Visalia Times Delta A Tulare woman will get an early and intimate Christmas gift this year � her fianc�'s kidney. Amy Mason, 26, has been in and out of hospitals since she was 8 years old. She has had two kidney transplants and at one point was clinically dead. But now she sees light at the end of the tunnel. If everything goes as scheduled, Mason should be getting a healthy kidney Dec. 19. The donor is her fianc�, 23-year-old Mike Zuch, and Mason can't thank him enough. "It's a major thing for someone to go through," she said. "It takes a special kind of person � selfless and loving." For a kidney transplant to work, Mason said, donor and recipient must match three out of six specific genes to prevent rejection of the transplanted tissue. As it turns out, Zuch and Mason were a four-for-six match � better than some blood relatives, Zuch said. Zuch � who Mason calls her "hero" � has never stayed overnight in a hospital. But this is what he knew he had to do, Zuch said. And what he wanted to do. "I just never had a choice," Zuch said. Zuch and Mason are Tulare natives who met in class at Sierra Vista High School. The two have been dating for seven years and have a house together. They have not set a wedding date. Life has been difficult for Mason over the past 18 years. She has had 30 surgeries, one after a transplanted kidney ruptured three days after the procedure. A few months ago, Mason said, she stopped breathing and was clinically dead for a couple of minutes. Mason's mother, Janice Mason, has been standing with her daughter through every surgery and hospital visit. "It's been a real challenge," Janice Mason said. This transplant is different than the other two Amy Mason received. The previous kidneys were taken out of donors who had recently died. The organs were put on ice and delivered to the hospital. In contrast, Zuch and Amy Mason will be in side-by-side operating rooms. The donor's freshly removed kidney will go directly to Mason's body. Doctor's can't predict how long a transplanted kidney will last. But the nature of this transplant gives Mason a better chance to have a long life, she said. Throughout the experience, Zuch and Amy Mason have retained their sense of humor. In fact, they have a bet going regarding the recovery period in Los Angeles. "I'll be in your room visiting you before you are in my room visiting me," Mason said to Zuch.
