What sets the North-East band The Futureheads apart from their fellow bands you might ask? Well, there isnt one single thing. In fact theres whole host of reasons. Firstly, the band hail from a location thats not one of the more major cities in England. Sunderland is where The Futureheads hail from. I know what youre thinking. Nothing special there, but can you name the last big band from Sunderland? I didnt think so.

Youll also notice that the band dont have one single frontman. Whereas you can easily name or even just point-out the front men of Oasis, The Killers and The Kaiser Chiefs for The Futureheads to do that is impossible. It was a joint band decision to share vocal duties and this makes for some variation in their songs. Take the very distinguishable cover of Kate Bushs Hounds of Love. This cover is very different from the original and if you didnt know it was a cover, you have thought it was a brand new song. Now just listen to any other song from their debut album and youll most likely agree that there is a good degree of variation, which is always a good thing in the modern day.

Another thing that you wont find in The Futureheads songs is guitar solos. The Sunderland lads decided that guitar solos are unnecessary and want to avoid them. They also want to banish the typical verse-chorus-verse structure. Credit to them, despite seeming to have such a strong set of donts what they have assembled is an excellent album. From the very cool and sleek Decent Days and Nights through to Meantime, I think youll be impressed.

Like it or not, The Futureheads are going to be around for a long while, in what is a very good time for British bands. It is a really crowded market out there with The Kaiser Chiefs, Hard-Fi, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party to name but a few all in the mix. All these bands have a special ingredient that sets them apart from the others. The battle to be number one between these could go on for years, but what an exciting battle it is going to be.
